Fridge turns on intermittently

GE Side by side model TPX24BRBA BB. The fridge only turns on intermittently. If I slide the temperature control to “off” and then slide it back to 5 or more it will turn on and cool until it reaches the desired temp. It will then turn off as normal, but from that point it doesn’t always turn back on on its own, to the point that all ice melts. Then sometimes it works on its own and cools down again. It always works when I manually slide temperature control off and then on again. No bad noises from compressor. Any ideas? Thank you.
