MacBook won’t turn on

I’m hoping someone can give their opinion on the symptoms I’m seeing before I spend any more time and put money into this. I got this MacBook from a customer and after looking at it they decided they didn’t want it.

It doesn’t turn on and there’s no visual signs of life. I have tried resetting the NVRAM, SMC, power cycling, unplugging the battery, using the charger with the battery unplugged. Removed the motherboard and tried cleaning it then putting back in but to no avail. The fan does spin for a second, then stops, then starts and repeats until the battery drains. The battery cells are flat. I have also used my dock and plugged it into my monitor but it doesn’t pick it up. I’ve plugged my keyboard in and it looks to be turning on and off, seems the MacBook must be in a restart loop. The trackpad also clicks.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. I suspect the logic board is knackered.

Thanks in advance.

I would do a bit more diagnostics here to see what is the issue. Get a USB-C power meter to place inline with the charger. What does it tell you?

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll see if I can find one.

I know it’s a few months later but I’ve finally got back round to the MacBook. The meter I’ve got says it’s drawing 20.04V and a max of 1.19 Amps when charging with the Steam Deck power brick I have.

@wo0dsw0rth - Sorry, didn’t see your post, been busy too.

So the voltage is correct, at this point I’m suspecting a bad cap in one of the power rails. This will take a bit of skill to trace out which one. Hopefully careful inspection looking for a damaged or burnt component will do it. If not a thermal camera or some 90% isopropyl alcohol which will evaporate on a hot component should lead you to the guilty party. You’ll still want a set of schematics and board view drawings to help guide you and ID what’s bad.

@danj no worries, thanks for getting back. Do you know any good places to find a schematic? I haven’t yet been able to locate one. I’m hoping to have some time to have another look at it in depth tomorrow. I’ll give your suggestion a go next.
