Edge of motherboard damaged by screwdriver, now won’t power on.

A customer of mine attempted to replace his own internal laptop battery and now it won’t power up in any way.

When taking the bottom cover off, I found that a hinge support screw was loosened that was partially below the edge of the motherboard causing a circular gouge in the motherboard. At closer inspection, I saw several layers of copper traces along the gouged edge. See photos below.

Would important traces be this close to the edge of the PCB that carry current to the CPU, etc.? Is this likely the cause of the power failing to turn on? (If so, obviously a new motherboard would be needed to be replaced, not worth the older laptop.)

@gatortpk we really can't assess this motherboard. You do need to disassemble your computer and remove teh board. Then repost the images of the damage. Once you have it removed, we also need to know what exact model your board is. The identifier for that will be on the back side on the motherboard.

Thanks for your always quick response OldTurkey.

I see SPS: 829900-601 for this HP motherboard in an Envy 15t-ae100 i7-6500U 2.5GHz laptop.

(I’ll remove the motherboard as soon as I can and post additional photos.)

@gatortpk

If the motherboard is an LA-C503P here are the schematics that may help

I almost included the additional number in my earlier comment: LA-C503P 829900-601.

It is an LA-C503P. Thanks for the schematics!

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

I looked through the schematics and saw that there are more layers than I expected and the power schematics on page 35. I didn’t see any pages with the actual geometry or locations of the traces, to see if the gouge on the edge of the board near the 20V input is the culprit. It makes sense that it is, but I’d like to confirm before stating that to my customer. I’ll google around for a trace layout of this LA-C503P PCB board.

Is my best bet to look at the HP ENVY 13 Quanta SP6 (or SP7) Boardview File to find the traces near that edge? (It’s been a long time since I’ve looked at a board view file.)

@gatortpk

I looked for an SP7 boardview file (that's what the board model series is) but couldn't find one, but I'm not sure if the boardview show traces or just the components. Others that I've looked at didn't
