Cannot Shut Down iPhone 6s Plus after iFixit Battery Replacement

After following the iFixit guide to replace the battery in my iPhone 6s Plus, the phone works fine, but I cannot use the power button on the side of the phone. It doesn't do anything. It doesn't lock the phone and it doesn't bring me to the option to power off the phone. Do you have any suggestions for a reassembly point I might have missed?

Hi Frank,

Check the operation of the flash; can you turn on the flashlight? If not, that would point toward the flex cable that has the power button and the flash on it. It's right next to the display connectors you would have had to unplug when you took off the display, and would be easy to dislodge while you're disconnecting the digitizer and LCD. Here's the connector I'm referring to.

It's shown on Step 40 of the iPhone 6s Plus Power Button Cable Assembly Replacement guide.

That would be my bet. You'll have to open up the phone again and make sure to reseat that connector. Test before you button it all back up again; if you're still having issues unplug it and check both sides for any bent or broken pins; those FPC connectors can get damaged if you screw down the retaining bracket when they're not plugged in correctly. Sometimes you can straighten out bent pins with fine tip tweezers.

Go ahead and check the connector then come on back and let us know what you found. Hopefully it'll be a simple fix.

Hi - You mention testing before reassembling. How would I do that? The procedure is to shut down the phone and disconnect the battery first.

@frankfallo22774 by connecting the battery

Thank you. Reseating the connector fixed the problem with the power button. However, the camera sensor is not working properly. I had it working after attaching the cables, but when I reattached the display cable bracket, the camera again stopped working.

@frankfallo22774 Again, that's almost certainly another connector problem. Those wide FPC connectors, especially the ones on the display assembly, can be tricky to get in 100% correctly. The camera/sensor cable is the first one you disconnect; it's the one shown on Step 21 of the Battery Replacement guide. The caution regarding the digitizer connector is applicable to the sensor connector as well:

When reconnecting the digitizer cable, do not press the center of the connector. Press one end of the connector, then press the opposite end. Pressing in the center of the connector can bend the component and cause digitizer damage.

Jerry - It's very kind of you to spend extra time providing guidance. Is the first cable (camera/sensor) only for the front camera or for both? It seems to be the rear camera that won't start operating. The headphone jack continues to operate. I cannot switch to the front camera either. But you do think that front cable is the one to keep trying to re-seat? Pressing with a finger or thumb? It's not so easy to stretch with the phone open at 90 degrees. But keep trying that and see if the camera comes to life?

Thanks - Frank
