This morning they were working perfectly, and suddenly they just refused to connect to my phone or laptop. I've tried the software update but that didn't help, and it won't reset either.

I literally just reset mine to check. Can you try this, when you turn the headphones on, don't let go of the power button just yet, wait for the alternating red-blue light to show up.
On clearing the old devices, you can not get that purple light until you can successfully activate the pairing mode which is the alternating red-blue light I mentioned above.
TLDR, try holding the power button much longer when you turn it on.
