Plastic melted near circuit board in IFB washing machine

In my IFB top load washing machine (https://www.ifbappliances.com/tl-sibs-10...), some kind of plastic near the circuit board has melted and it was dripping since few days.

Yellow to Red coloured substance in the photo above is the plastic I mentioned above, it's in semi liquid form and is dripping.

IFB technician who visited to look at this said it was due to high voltage and has asked us to not use the machine till they replace the board. Is this really serious issue or the technician has wrongly diagnosed the issue? He is also pushing me to buy a voltage stabiliser from IFB for this - before they repair.

It look more like a conformal coating to me. If it is plastic melting you should be able to find where it is coming from. High voltage isn't going to melt plastic unless it is arcing someplace and therefore getting hot. That will leave an obvious black spot and the plastic isn't going to cover the whole PCB like that. Personally, I think the tech has no clue or is scamming you. Ask him to show you where the plastic has melted, and why it is covering the whole PCB. Utility voltage isn't going to increase enought to melt plastic. A voltage regulator for that would be high power and expensive and I have never seen or know one to be needed.

So what is the problem with the machine that required a tech visit?

Thanks for your response.

I noticed this substance dripping from the machine and hence asked for visit. Machine was working properly.

Yeah, I think you're right.

If this is melting, could heat be a problem? I have kept the machine on the top floor. And even though the machine is under a roof and doesn't get direct sunlight, the area will be mostly hot throughout the day.

If this is conformal coating melting, what can be the options to fix it?

Thanks again.

@ruggb, any idea why the conformal coating be melting? and what is the way to fix this?

Read this https://www.vaniman.com/ultimate-conform...

Conformal coating protects the electronics from moisture. Most HVAC equipment PCBs use it because they are usually in an uncontrolled environment.

If it is on the PCB, and deteriorating from normal heat of the machine, then it is a manufacturing defect. It isn't something that will cause an operational problem unless you are in the tropics with high moisture and your top floor has no HVAC or the washer is spraying water on it, it is just making a mess.

You can't fix a problem unless you know what is causing it. Being a parts jockey can get expensive.

1. Is it indeed conformal coating on the PCB?

2. Is there excessive heat in the machine?

3. Is there any other environmental conditions that would remove the coating? (read the above article)

If 1 = yes and 2&3 = no, then it is a mfg. problem and replacing the PCB will fix it....IF.... the cause was corrected by the mfg.

If 2 and/or 3 is yes, then that is what you need to correct.
