Power button/novo button turns on laptop, blinks once, then turns off

The laptop suddenly stopped working. Things I have tried:

  1. Removed the main battery and press and holding the power button for 30 seconds.
  2. I tried to find RTC battery but this model doesn't look to have one? I'm not sure
  3. I tried to disconnect other cables to the motherboard and press the power button for 30 seconds.

Another weird thing is that afterwards when you press the Lenovo vantage button with the star and s (after f12) it acts as a power button and does the same thing. It turns off afterwards. It all started with some windows 11 update, it probably updated the BIOS then it also broke the speakers. I did a clean install thinking it was the drivers. Still didn't work. Then I checked the speakers with 12v battery and it was responding. It was working then just without the speakers. But now it wont turn on both with power and novo. Does anyone have the same issue and fix? Thank you!

You don't mention if you removed the hard drive. Try that and see if you can get into the BIOS/UEFI utility by repeatedly pressing the F2 key.

IdeaPad 5 Pro Service Manual

Since your problem started with a Windows 11 update the above sounds like a good place to start.

Thank you Mike! I tried removing the ssd and the WiFi too but no luck. I wonder if the motherboard is fried.

Hi @j4laptopfix

I don't think a Windows update would fry the motherboard. Have you tried disconnecting the battery (page 29 in service manual) and just plug in the charger?

von

Ah I see. Yes! I have tried unplugging the battery and just the charger. It still does the same thing unfortunately. Do usb c hub fry motherboards?

von

@j4laptopfix "Do usb c hub fry motherboards?" Not that I know of.

I just reread ypur initial question. Could you explain what you actually did "Then I checked the speakers with 12v battery"? Which speakers? What 12V battery? You have me worried.

von

My bad! I used a 9v battery to see if the speakers work and it reacted to the 9v so I thought that speakers were still good. I then used the laptop again with the usb hub with the power plugged in the hub so now I’m thinking it must be the usb c hub that broke the motherboard.

Not a solution but more an Identical problem that might be caused by a bad usb c powered hub.

We do have an identical ideapad that we think got damaged by an usb hub power supply.

first speakers stopped working, within windows or Linux no errors but when ever the laptop would play a sound including boot-up we would just hear click click click.

Now it reacts to both the power button and novo button with the power light on for 10 20 seconds and then the light turns off and the screen neither external screen turns on, no fan no noises from the speakers.

essentially it is dead, no windows update recently , but that should not make the bios inaccessible.

To add to the saga since there was someone who had memory problems causing boot issues I took the shield of and tried to turn on the laptop and low and behold at some point I got an extra led (fn lock) to turn on and the fan started spinning and the display got power(backlight turned on).

This was however short lived, it is back to only the power light for a little bit.

I took the motherboard out and found 2 fried minuscule ic's very far apart.

and not even on the same side.

Block Image

"close" to usb c ports

Block Image

close to io board connector which has power and novo button

I sent it to an independent, recommended service that repairs motherboards. I was betting on RAM - the specialist said it was the processor. says it's popular in this model. I only have to buy the motherboard from Aliexpress for $300. I give up and share the computer for parts.

My Lenovo Ideapad 5 14ACN6 Type 82L7 same symptoms. Power light on briefly, then off. RTC time drifts. No CMOS battery inside. It comes on if move all keys again and again, have saved files, re installed Windows without data. Run Lenovo Vantage Smart Performance Hardware Scan. it cancels the GPU memory test , all else pass. Suspect water ingress, maybe at RTC or bios chips. Sorry no solution.
