iPad shut down after battery replacement

Hello there !

After battery replacement, my iPad worked fine for some days, and started to shut down randomly when throttling on the GPU.

I opened it up a second time, and noticed that one of the battery connector was slightly pushed down, so I managed to pull it out a little.

I’m still getting the same problem : when throttling on the GPU (Procreate, and especially when running Geekbench GPU Benchmark) the iPad’s screen immediately turns off, and only reboot when plugged to a power source (ac adaptor or computer connected)

The issue occurs both plugged and unplugged.

I spent a lot of time searching for a similar problem, without finding a 100% match, and I’m wondering if this is a software or hardware related problem.

Is the battery faulty? Is the motherboard’s FPC battery connector still damaged and not sending the good informations?

Is there a way to test the battery output power? The 3,6v reading will not be enough right?

I'm not 100% sure that the pin did not make contact, but I remember that this one was a little bit pushed down (I managed to pull it out during the second teardown)

This sounds to me like the battery isn't able to deliver enough power to support the workload.

Unfortunately that means this could be either issue, but I'm leaning more towards the battery. Do you know which pin on the connector was the one not making good contact? A picture might help? Feel fee to add one to your post.

@nicont19878 I finessed it back into the question as an update to keep all the data about your issue together.

But anyway, that's almost always the problematic one. It's possible that's related to this, but I'm still a bit skeptical . That pin is the one that's labelled BATT_SNS on the schematic. Which would be battery sense. So it's responsible for carrying data about battery behavior.

Typically issues with that will present as random shutdowns, or erratic battery levels. But I suppose its possible it could present this way. If the shutdown is only occurring during heavy workloads, that still seems like it might be the battery, something with management system could be amiss.

If you want to check output, you can measure voltage on the battery connector. 3.6V is definitely a bit low, the battery for those is rated for 3.7V output, but a fully charged battery could push that to 4V or so. You would just need to measure between the 2 larger pads on the battery.
