Takes forever to powerup

I did a factory reboot and my laptop still takes 15-20 minutes to boot up.

I deleted some unused added programs as well.

Thank you

In order to properly help you we need the exact model number of your HP Pavilion 10 Series laptop? Is it still running slowly after the boot-up?

In general, if it is still slow after a "factory reset" then there may be a hardware problem. It could be as simple as dust blocking the cooling vents and/or a fan needing cleaning or worse a dying hard drive, etc.

Sorry, I was out of town for a few days. Here is the serial number of my computer.

CND64459M4. I think it’s a pavilion 10. It won’t open the pop up to the utility screen.

von

I ran the diagnostic scan from HP.com sure enough it is the hard drive failing. Thinking about purchasing a SSD and a SATA adapter and trying it myself.

Thank you.

Hi @robertlohr66053

What do you mean by "It won’t open the pop up to the utility screen."? That is very vague and generic. We would like to help you but need more information.

Searching that serial number on the HP web site results in:

HP Notebook - 15-ay114cy

Serial number: CND64459M4 Product number: Z4N98U

Where did you get Pavilion 10 from?

Go to the HP web site and run their diagnostics program. This will tell you if you have any hardware issues.

Looking in Device Manager in Windows will tell you if any device drivers are corrupted by showing an exclamation point. If there are any uninstall and re-install

You shouldn’t need a sata adapter to upgrade your computer unless it’s broken. I recommend getting your windows license key and backup up your files somewhere before installing windows on the ssd and swapping.

The hard drive maybe dying, you could check it with hard disk sentinel, if it is dying, you could replace the hard disk with another hard disk or a sata ssd

Over time the hard drives wear out causing the start up and even use to be very slow. Usually it's a sign that your hard drive is on its way out. On your model the specs indicate you have a 500 GB 5400 rpm SATA. You can resolve this buy cloning over your data or backing up your data and either replacing the hard drive with another hard drive or I recommend installing an internal ssd. I've done this on many older laptops it bring them back to life and makes them faster.

I’m looking at this SSD I found on Amazon. Are all SSD’s compatible with all laptops?

And would I need the replacement cables and mounting bracket?

Thank you. I’ve never done this before. Usually just throw it away and buy a new one. Trying to keep what I have and make it work thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

Hi @robertlohr66053 Your laptop already has a SATA drive so changing to a SSD is fairly simple especially if you use an external USB to SATA adapter cable. Most drive manufacturers have free drive cloning software.

von

@aactech I second this. Clonezilla is a free easy one to use. 2.5” internal SSD is what you’ll want to lookup if ordering. It’s easier to clone of you order the same size drive. (If your hard drive is 128gb best to get a 128gb ssd). To answer your before questions the mounting screws, bracket, and cable should work fine with the new ssd

von

@fabio64209 Most decent cloning software has an option to fit to a larger drive as, well, most people upgrading are moving to a larger drive.
