My Passport WD External HD fails to mount to desktop

My Mac formatted Western Digital My Passport External HD crapped out and doesn't start.. anyone know how to resuscitate these things? Help! Any data recovery solutions out there?

Doesn't mount to desktop. It got knocked out of th USB cable a couple times while it was plugged into the MacBook and running. I've tried other USB cables. Th hardrive looks to be fused/soldered to a mini motherboard.

Here's a couple pics:

You can remove that "motherboard" If its not screwed on just pull it out gently.

The only thing I see that might be holding that tiny board in place is these two tabs that i have highlighted in the pic...try to get them off.

Would you be able to take a high quality photo of the circuit board? Thank you.

The first thing to do is with it connected, start up Disk Utility from the Utility folder in the Application folder on your computers hard drive. With Disk Utility running see if it shows on the left side. If it does then run disk first aid and tell it to repair. When it is done it will let you know if it fixed it or if you still need to do more. Usually a program such as TechTool Pro would help at this point.

If it doesn't show up in the disk Utility window then you might have a more serious hardware issue or if you have it go straight to TechTool Pro and see what happens.

Bad news whenever a mounted drive is unplugged. Can corrupt drive and system.

I understand that from the day a hard drive is manufactured the disk is dying, the platters are losing their magnetism. I also understand that jarring a hard drive not in use can cause the parked heads to move from their position, if the mechanism has slop. Please explain to me how a mounted drive that is unplugged can become corrupt and or how the system can become corrupt aside from the previously mentioned?

Have u ever unplugged an external drive while it's still mounted? U can hear a loud "Clang" or "click" in the drive as you are cutting power off to the disk abruptly and I believe this can definitely affect the drive. If you have a HFS+ partition, then Data loss itself isn't a problem, but on FAT or NTFS partitions, you can definitely lose Data. The other day I pulled a thumbdrive out of my Mac without unmounting it and the Mac refused to mount or "see" it in DiskUtility. I threw DiskWarrior at it and it repaired it. So, I recommend this software for any Mac user.

Point taken Majesty, on the damage is done at moment of power loss. Thank you for the clarification.

I have used DiskWarrior with much success in situations like this. DiskWarrior has also fixed thumb drives that my Mac no longer would see or mount. It's an expensive software, but a life saver and must have for any Mac user. I believe that tiny "Motherboard" can just be pulled right off. It might just be an adapter of some sort for the external encloser. It should have a regular Sata connector on the drive itself.

Just try to remove the tabs I highlighted if it does not pull right off.

DiskWarrior might be expensive, but compared to Data Recovery software it's much cheaper, and it can also make the drive usable again. It'll pay for itself in the end. It has already paid for itself in my case.

enclosure* I meant lol

I pondered the notion of the USB port being on an attached daughter board with a SATA behind it. But could not find anything to substantiate it. It is good you came across that HP.

What you have there is a WD Scorpio Blue drive in the 500GB flavor, model number WD5000BMVU. The controller board on it is known for being problematic. Your drive has a twin with a SATA interface instead of the USB interface, WD Scorpio Blue model WD5000BEVT.

Your data is on the HD platters, it isn't going anywhere. As you have defined the situation. The hard drive doesn't spin, isn't recognized by the computer. If I am wrong on my surmise of the situation. Try data recovery programs prior to following my suggestion.

You need to acquire another hard drive with one of the previously mentioned model numbers. If you turn your hard drive over you should find screws attaching the circuit board to the hard drive. You need to remove the screws and slowly, gently lift the board away from the hard drive. Pay close attention while you are doing this because there maybe a delicate ribbon cable coming from the hard dive and attached to the controller board. You need to release that cable if one is there to remove the controller board from the hard drive. You need to repeat this process with the newly acquired hard drive. Then take the good controller board and attach it to the one that has your data. If the reading heads made it to their parked position not only will your hard drive be recognized but your data will be fully accessible with out the aide of a data recovery program. If the heads didn't make it to their parked position your drive will be recognized by the computer and it may say the HD needs formatted. Don't pay attention to that and do not format it. A good data recovery program will find your information anyways. If you need to use a data recovery program you will also need enough free space on a hard drive to move the data over to.

I have done this successfully several times. I've never had a time where I tried it and it didn't work. I have done it with western digital hard drives, never with your model of hard drive.

Several people here have mentioned data recovery programs. I am not an Apple person. If your operating system was Windows I would recommend several to you. If you do have to use a data recovery program and you don't get it all the first time, try tweaking the program you are using or try another program. Your data isn't going anywhere soon. Good Luck

+ worked for me a couple of times. A little tedious but a good light and in my case a nice magnifying lamp will work wonders. Just take your time and CLEAN your workbench

I believe this board is attached directly to the twin Sata connectors. I just removed a drive from a HP which had a similar looking adapter/board. If he gets that board of, he can then install the drive in another encloser or directly on to the Mac. This drive may be good, I would not invest in expensive Data Recovery software. Disk Warrior will most likely repair the drive if indeed the directory is corrupt, which I'm almost certain is the case,

von

Majesty with all due respect I suggested they look to others for advice for data recovery programs and disqualified myself as one to suggest a program, since I am not an Apple user. In all candor my answer/suggestion only applies if the drive controller board is determined to be bad. It is last option for recovering the data before sending it to the professionals with a clean room.

None taken ABCellars. ;) 2years later. :)

I wasn't downplaying your advice, just chiming in. :)

if i want to "repair" in disk utility do i run the risk of loosing my data? i am sort of freaking out now that it wont show up as an icon on my desktop. i don't think it was improperly unplugged... or dropped or anything. and its powers up, it just wont show on my computer (also tried my sisters and brothers, nothing).

thank you!

i want to try the repair but only if by repairing its not restoring it to factory or something and clearing the data on it.... :(

Hi, since yesterday, the drive has stopped functioning. I have tried it both on windows and Mac and on both the drive fails to register, where as before when connected it would bring the drive up and i was able to navigate to folders within, now it doesn't give me this option. I have tried disk utility and device manager options to see the drive and run diagnostics on it, but it doesn't bring anything up for me to be able to do this. could you please help me with this?
