This sounds very much like a hard disk problem. If it was brand new you should be able to get a replacement or refund from the vendor.

Under the S.M.A.R.T. tab select your hard disk in the box at the top. Review the results then click the wide "Perform an in-depth online analysis" button. This will bring up a web page showing how your results compare with other disks of the same type. It may be that neither of these show anything, but if they do you'll have something concrete to show the vendor.
