MacBook Pro 2011 not charging

I just replaced my battery that i purchased at IFIXIT. I installed and charged for 10 hours as instructed. The green light on charger came on immediately, however as soon as you disconnect the charger the laptop shuts down. With the charger plugged in I power up and the laptop is telling me that there is no battery connected. 0 cycles etc.. Any suggestions. I hope I didn't waste my money on a brand new battery.

Would you please send copies of the full size, original pictures to abcellars@gmail dot com. As they exist here, they are small and blur when I try to blow them up. Sorry, but my elder eyes are not what they use to be.

Hi Djabs,

After the light comes on as green, does it change to amber/orange?

If not, you may have not connected the battery properly. Or something went wrong during the installation.

I suggest trying the easy simple things first: disconnect the battery, examine the battery cable and the connector on the board. Is something torn/broken/part removed? Use only plastic tools to pry up/out the battery cable. No screwdriver or anything metallic. Be gentle and careful ;)

If all seem ok, reseat the battery cable. Make sure it is well connected to the board and try charing again. Does the light start green and turn amber this time? Does the battery hold a charge now?

Let us know what happens.

Thanks Rany, I got jammed up at work last night and did not have a chance to take a look, I will try this tonight and let you know.

You should get to the point where once connected, the charger light will be green but soon after turn to amber.

Another way to know if your battery is properly connected is to press on the battery level indicator (small round button on the side of the MacBook Pro). If you see steady or flashing green lights, the battery is connected. If no light comes on, the battery is not connected or not detected.

everything looks connected properly. when I go into system info under hardware and power it shows:

Charge remaining: 0

Fully charged: No

Charging: No

Full charge capacity: 0

Health Info

Cycle count: 0

Battery Installed: No

Amperage: 0

Voltage: 0

Listed under AC Charger it shows

Connected: Yes

Charging: No

My charger remains green when I attach to laptop, it does not change

nothing happens when I press the small round button

Let's rewind here.

1) WHY did you replace the battery?

2) What does the ORIGINAL battery do now?

3) Take a picture of what is happening when your new battery is plugged in. I want to see the upper right hand corner of the screen after you have clicked on the battery, with it plugged in. I want to see the icon, and the words.

4) Near your battery, you will see a little chip that says isl6259ahrtz on it. It is a black chip, most easily recognizable with a big lowercase i on it, and 7 solder pads on each side. Take good pictures of this area and upload them, none of that low resolution/terribly lit cellphone junk!

My son got this laptop where he works. They purchase new equipment and give away the old to employees. When he obtained this it only worked while plugged in, so we assumed it was a battery issue. This is why I replaced it.I will take some pictures tonight after work. I am a MAC virgin so bear with me please. On # 3, when I power up, what do you want me to go into to take a photo? Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

von

Click the battery icon in the upper right corner of the screen next to the clock, I want to see what it says when you have the magsafe plugged in.

And pictures of that area of the board please! If you are confused as to what I am asking for just take a bunch and I will find what I need.

How do I upload pictures to this chat?

von

No clue, this will be your adventure. Host them somewhere, there are tons of image sites. I'll click if you link me!

@tahtacell, what happened that lead to this battery issue? Also would you be able to post a picture of the message being displayed by the battery?

Having the same problem for a long time. It is as if the power demands of this computer exceed its ability to recharge and that constant drain combined with the battery being charged yet over-drained at the same time just causes havoc and the battery to become unresponsive for a long long time to allow things to cool down. The mag cord connection with the light becomes very hot when it is charging or trying to charge.

Went for hours today trying all the tricks but it would never start to charge, always remained 0 %, the amber light on so showing that it is charging and then the screen blacks out because the charge fails to start.

The routine for me is cleaning the mag safe connecter with alcohol (with the cord unplugged) and the end of the cord itself using a swab with some of the cotton peeled off. After a thorough cleaning of the connections and making sure the little pins inside of the mag connection extend outward, sometimes banging the cord with the pins facing down on the counter when it is wet with alcohol, then checking with a magnifier glass to see if the contact pins extend out instead of being recessed inward, and carefully connecting making sure the cord is flat, the pressing the cord in and taping it tight so the connection doesn't shift.

Sometimes shutting everything down to let it start charging will get it charging, sometimes not. Letting everything cool down seems to help most of the time. The computer just will not respond, no matter what you do, for a couple of hours and then, after you keep trying better connections, restarting and many other things that may be having no effect at all, the charging cycle kicks in. Once it starts charging, it charges quickly. Right now it is at 39 %, was at zero 15 minutes ago. When it runs into the no charge problem, the battery drains extremely fast, much faster than if you are just using the computer unplugged on battery life, which can be as much as 70 minutes on a good day. It is as if the heat is a major factor on draining the battery and preventing it from charging, as if it causes some kind of short.

Judging from the amount of heat on the connection where the light is and the higher watt adapter needed for this particular model, it seems the problem is the power demands of the battery and the power demands of running the computer can exceed the power supply and this causes the battery, connections and related circuits and chips to heat up and not charge properly; a spread of problems culminate and the charging system goes into a non-responsive mode and the computer blacks out for 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

There doesn't seem to be a solid solution for this issue. This may be why the MagSafe connector is not used for the newer models. I wish there was a way to charge the battery directly without having to rely on the light pin connections in the mag safe connection and the delicate, heat sensitive electronics that decide how to distribute the energy between charging the battery and running the computer. Obviously it cannot deal with not having enough energy to do both and just blinks out. Closing extra windows and letting your computer cool down once or twice a day seems to help but the problem can come on quick and shut you down a couple times a week and it just takes time to get things working again.
