My phone will turn on but the screen is black

So the other day the screen on my phone quit working. I tried restarting it, but that didn't work. What happens is that it will turn on since I can hear it start up, but nothing will show on the screen.

There might be multiple causes to this problem. Is there any sign of damage to the screen? Cracks or water damage? Any damage to the display screen may cause it not to turn on.
