How do I fix playstation 3 it wont play discs

This problem is caused by sony's crapy system. It happens when you install a new game and then run a system update. Next time you start the system it stops playing game discs. I had this happen 3 times already to my system. Even though it is Sony's fault they refuse to fix it and want $150 for the repair. My system has been a $700 paper weight for most of the time since I bought it on launch day.

Ok a few things I've read here.

First off, replacing the diode is too comlicated and you have to have the right tools to get the diode in the laser assembly and calibrated right.

Second off, you can't just replace the WHOLE Blu-Ray drive, the motherboard and drive board share a key so you have to make sure you transfer your original drive board over to the new drive if you decide to go that route.

The best solution and most cost effective way of doing it is replacing the laser assembly. Make sure to check if it's a single eye or double eyed laser so you can know what laser to purchase. There are plenty of guides out there to show you how to replace it.

While your PS3 is off, Hold the power button down and keep holding it until the PS3 turns on and beeps once the once again then shuts down (about 30 - 40 seconds), Then do the same thing again but release the button when you hear a double beep, This should bring you into a Safe Mode, From that go to [Rebuild Database] it will then reinstall all the device drivers for your PS3, This method should work if not then your drive may need to be replaced.

i had the same problem but took my ps3 apart and the bluray drive and found a dime stuck to my laser eye reader, darn little kids messing around with stuff they shouldnt.

Once you get the drive off, you will need to replace the circuit board that is screwed onto the bottom of the original drive, as that board is married to the motherboard, and will not work in another console.

Honestly, I have just taken then system apart and used a cotton swab with a minuscule amount of rubbing alcohol on it and wiped the laser off very gently and carefully and have not had any trouble since. Occasionally I will tear it apart every so often as these consoles are notorious for collecting dust inside them, no matter how OCD you are on keeping your gaming area clean, and just use a compressed air can to blow out any dust that may have found its way inside. Maybe Sony, or someone in general can invent some mesh weaving to attach to the outside of the system thereby collecting any dust and debris from finding its way inside the system.
