The 1999 Chevrolet Malibu is part of the fifth generation (1997-2003) manufactured by General Motors. This is the first smaller, front-wheel-drive Malibu that General Motors put back on the market after the Malibu line was temporarily discontinued in the early 1980's.

Hi,

Here is a description of how to remove the thermostat

"The Malibu has 2x 13 mm bolts on the inlet! Also it is impossible to get to the lower bolt without removing the throttle body! And then getting a wrench (13 mm) on it is difficult , you can only get a small turn each time due to limited clearances .Luckily you don't need to remove the lower bolt completely just enough to remove the neck. The neck is slotted so once the upper bolt is removed it will slide up and out .

HINT When you go to reinstall it have the bolt screwed in as far as you can and still get the slot to go on it .To remove the throttle body you must first disconnect the air inlet .Then the 2 bolts on the top (10 mm) that hold the black throttle cable bracket to the manifold.

There are two things that hold the body to the manifold: A 13 mm bolt at the upper left and a stud at the lower right .The bolt is straight forward but to remove the stud you must remove the nut that is holding the pipe retaining bracket and move the bracket out of the way and use a 13 mm deep well socket to remove the stud . After removing the electrical connectors and the 2 small hoses coming off the bottom you can just fold the assembly up and out of your way! Don't worry about reconnecting the electrics you can't do them wrong they are all different and you can't plug the wrong one!"

Here is a video which shows how to do it. I think it is the right one, if your car has the 3.1L or 3.4L GM engine.
