Replace HDD with SSD

I've replaced my old iMac (2008) HDD with an SSD. I'm now trying to install OSX Snow Leopard, and then back up from an external drive. However the system tells me that there is not enough space on the disc. Is this because the SSD is not properly connected? Looking in Disk Utilities I can't see it. Am I going to have to open up the Mac again?

Yes, you'll need to open the system again. Sadly, I think I know what you are facing here.

This series of iMac has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface. Your SSD is likely a fixed speed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) which won't work in this system. Double check the drives spec sheet to see if it can be set via software (as some allow that) otherwise you'll need to find a different SSD to put in.

The other issue you may face here is the systems firmware may need updating. Follow this Apple T/N to check but you'll need to boot up under an external drive at this point About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers. If you have something newer thats OK (El Capitan updates some systems with a something still newer).

You are right. I did have to take the thing apart again. I was putting the SSD into an Ice Dock cradle, but the connection was not good. I took it out of the cradle and connected it directly. Bingo! It works perfectly. Now another question . I just taped the SSD into position with gaffa tape. Is it going to be safe like that?

Why did you go with such an expensive adapter unit? All you really needed is something like this: OWC 2.5" to 3.5" Drive Adapter Bracket. Unlike HD's, SSD's don't get that hot. Besides this kit give you the needed screws to properly mount it. No I wouldn't use any tape as the adhesives they use breakdown and you'll also interfere with the SSD's cooling (which it still needs).
