Blinking question mark folder. Command Option R doesn't work.

Computer was working fine until two power ups ago it took a while to come online. Then we got a spinning wheel of death. I did a hard restart and got the blinking question mark folder. I tried the command R and the command option r. No change.

Hold during startup

Shift (⇧) Start up in safe mode.

Option (⌥) Start up to Startup Manager, which allows you to choose other startup disks, if available.

If your Mac is using a firmware password, you're asked to enter the password first.

D Start up from the built-in Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics utility, depending on your Mac model. Or use Option-D to start up from this utility over the Internet.

N Start up from a compatible NetBoot server, if available. To use the default boot image on the NetBoot server, hold down Option-N instead.

iMac Pro doesn't support this startup key.

Command-R Start up from the built-in macOS Recovery system. Or use Option-Command-R or Shift-

Option-Command-R to start up from macOS Recovery over the Internet. macOS Recovery installs different versions of macOS, depending on the key combination you use while starting up.

Option-Command (⌘)-P-R Reset NVRAM (or PRAM).

If your Mac is using a firmware password, this combination causes your Mac to start up from macOS Recovery instead. Turn off the firmware password from macOS Recovery, then restart and reset NVRAM.

Command-S Start up in single-user mode.

T Start up in target disk mode.

Command-V Start up in verbose mode.

Eject (⏏), F12, mouse button, or trackpad button Eject removable media, such as an optical disc.

....................

The flashing question mark means it cannot detect the hard drive. Did you happen to get any liquid on it or sit it in a puddle of water?

You can try internet recovery or booting off of install media and going to the disk utility to check the status of the drive.

Hello Ivan, hope you're doing great.

I recently encountered a problem with my old MacBook early 2009 mb5.2 model.

I have upgraded to high Sierra(Unsupported OS) from el capitan (which is max supported OS on this Mac). I found it running fine except for camera hardware and mic. And sometimes it's laggy too. So I decided to downgrade. I tried to command+R to re install from recovery mac os. But don't work. Show's High Sierra to download and continue. Further it is also unable to download.

Now again as per the apple service care, I followed the instructions to internet recovery. I erased(using DiskStation utility in boot) the Macintosh HD all data, to clean install. And now when I tried to reinstall OS from recovery Mac OS. Still the same issue, takes me to the page High Sierra download and that won't do.

Am unable to restore the os to its original OS which came alongwith it when at the time of purchase.

After quiet hour's of try, I felt sleep. And when I woke up to resume the work.

Now when I restarted the pc, I see a blinking question mark folder.

Now I can't get to any recovery mode, or boot mode, none of the key combination work in this case. Except these two options either questions mark page with all combination of hold press keys, or

Secondly a blank white page with mouse cursor when I try only "option" hold press while turning on.

Please help how to fix this.

I can see my HDD is working.

I can hear Mac chime at start up, then white screen with questions mark blinking folder.

Somewhere in the web I read, a guy named Ivan, reported that his 14' MacBook after upgrading to highsierra had updated it's logic board files also, which now certainly not able to read old data or HDD. So now how to figure it out.

Please any help is most appreciated.

The cut and paste answer Joe gave is for Macs newer than this one. You have a failed hard drive or corrupt system folder. Boot up from the original system installation disk ( command C on start up with disk inserted),or a 10.6 retail Snow Leopard disk and run disk utilities on the drive. That failing, replace the drive.

Hey all. I have a Mid 2010 MacBook and I, too, am having the same exact issue after the last High Sierra update. I’m thinking it might have been a corrupt file or something to have erased several ppl’s hard drives. I’m absolutely positive that no liquid has ever come in contact with it. I have been without a computer for the past month and I work from home with my MacBook as my only way of accessing my control panel so I can get a paycheck. Smart phones aren’t allowed

Hi, i heard on fixit website to try to boot after removing HARD DISK - that might solve the problem as it will force it to boot from a usb or cd version of OS system - It hasn’t worked for me, but that might help someone else - good luck to you.I still cant fix my MacBook 17inch - flashing question mark, wont load, or go to disk utility - goes to apple with the USB software, but then goes to WHITE SCREEN OF DEATH - and nothing! :(

I can't start my MacBook using control R, control option R, or shift control option R.

For all combinations I only get the folder with a question mark shown.

What can it mean and how can I fix it?

I had the same issue. I was able to create a bootable external hard drive with the latest Mac OS and then boot Mac from that hard drive and then install Mac OS on the internal hard drive.
