Brake Pedal Slowly Sinks to Floor After Coming to a Standstill?

I own a 2012 Kia Sorento EX. It’s been quite good all these years.

Here’s the issue: When ever I brake and come to a standstill ( For instance at a traffic light stop) the brakes work very well as they should. But as I’m stationary, resting my foot on the firm brake pedal, slowly the pedal starts going soft and slowly sinks to the floor. Simultaneously the car just starts creeping forward. I’ve bumped into a few cars this way. Thankfully no damage for either driver. Only way to remain stationary at this point is to press the brake pedal to the floor or lift pedal and quickly press down again until the same happens.

How it first started: It appeared first when my ABS module started malfunctioning when I hit a huge pothole with my left-front wheel while braking downhill. There was this rrrr-ing noise and the brakes stopped working for a brief moment downhill. (Very scary)

Fixed but came back: The Manufacturer authorized repair center in our country completely replaced the ABS unit & replaced the brake fluid. But after just 2 weeks of the car’s brakes working good as new, the issue came back!

The master cylinder has no leaks and the break fluid is clear. The car still brakes very strong. The issue only arises when stationary.

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on?

Update (03/23/2018)

I found this thread and the OP seems to have experienced exact symptoms. And apparently replacing Master Cylinder has worked.

Hi Yesin,

Have you noticed any sort of brake fluid leaks down near the wheels? When you hit that pothole, you could have damaged a whole slew of components in the process, such as the brake line going to the wheel brake cylinder, the wheel brake cylinder itself, or the caliper/rotor/pads. I would check the front left wheel, as it sounds like you're continuously losing brake pressure when your brakes are applied, and pumping them once or twice rebuilds the brake pressure. Also check your brake fluid level to see if it's dropping off.

Another thing to check is your master cylinder and whether or not you are loosing vacuum.

I have the same problem and have replaced the master cylinder.and have bleed the bakes about 20 times .The only thing that I have done to make the brake pedal nice and hard ,was to cap off the proportioning valve line to the master cylinder return , And have replaced proportioning valve . The only thing left to replace is the pressure limit valve

AUTO BLEED ABS BRAKES LIKE A PRO WITH THIS INFORMATION AND TYPE EQUIPMENT – IF YOUR VEHICLE IS 6 YEARS OR OLDER.

OK folks. BEFORE YOU WASTE A LOT OF MONEY changing out parts; please read this completely and check out EVERY ONE of these links. Don’t forget to check with your local parts store (AutoZone, Advanced Auto, etc.) to see if they rent a scanner that can perform ABS Brake Bleeding. Usually, you pay FULL PRICE, and then get FULL REFUND after you return the rental in as good condition. AWESOME PROGRAM AS LONG AS FOLKS DON’T ABUSE IT. Oh, and make sure it’s a rental you are paying for and not a new one, or you’ll be stuck with it.

First do a conventional brake bleeding per your manual. Then do an ABS Brake Bleeding per your manual (you will need a code scanner with an ABS Brake Bleeding function. If you’re still having an issue after completing the ABS Brake Bleeding the problem will more than likely be located within the ABS Brake (hydraulic) Control Unit or the Master Brake Cylinder.

NOTE: You should know that if you just replace either or both of these units willy-nilly, you will still be left with the same initial problem - as you will still have to perform an ABS Brake Bleed operation to remove any trapped air from of either new unit.

Some FORD ABS Brake (hydraulic) Control Units have two test ports where you can insert a stiff piece of wire into the port to measure the movement of the wire (outward), when brakes are applied. (Wire should only move out about ¼”, if wire moves out more closely to 1” then that is considered excessive, and ABS Brake (hydraulic) Control Unit should be replaced. If both ports are within limits then it is highly probable that the problem is in the Master Brake Cylinder. You might want to do a Master Brake Cylinder check per your service manual.

NOTE: A mushy brake pedal will never be caused by the Vacuum Brake Booster. If that unit fails, it will be harder to apply the brakes. It will not make your brakes mushy.

IMPORTANT – To keep in mind:

1)      ALL Do-It-Yourself scanners are reliant on the FREE INFORMATION released by automobile manufacturers (Std. codes and std. functions) on the 6th year of your vehicle’s age. During the first 5 years of your vehicle’s age; specialty codes and functions are sold at a hefty price to manufacturers of professional diagnostic equipment. Codes such as brakes, airbag, etc, and functions such as troubleshooting tips and part failure probability prioritization; and ABS Brake Bleeding, etc. That is why such scanners cost in the thousands; some over $10,000.00.

2)       For the above reason, vehicles within NEW to 5 years old will not have access to any of the specialty functions and codes within the Do-It-Yourself scanners, and will have to be taken to a professional shop with access to this information.

3)      Even though manufacturers of scanners say that they offer lifetime updates; they’re not completely honest. For example:

a)      ALL top of the line newest and greatest scanner bought today [10-28-2018] will only provide complete functionality for vehicles 2013 and below; 2014 and above will be limited to the standard engine codes and functions (All other specialty scanner codes and functions will be non-applicable).

b)      If an update becomes available for the latest and greatest scanner you buy today; a year from now it will not include the next vehicle year (2014); it will only include certain updates for the vehicles you already have full coverage for.

c)       So as the years roll on, and your “2014 to 2018” is now over 6 years old; to get full scanner coverage on that vehicle, you’ll have to buy another latest and greatest scanner, in that 6th year or after.

d)      There is almost never an update to the UPDATE SOFTWARE for a newer operating system for your computer. So if you buy a new computer in the future with a newer operating system (whatever supersedes today’s Microsoft Windows 10) than you better consider holding on to your old computer so you can continue doing updates (for as much as it might matter). My current latest and greatest (for that time) Actron scanner I bought 3 years ago, received 1 update within 6 months after I bought it. Since then there has been absolutely NO NEW UPDATES available.

e)      THEY NEVER PUT THIS INFO ANYWHERE IN THEIR LITERATURE OR ON LINE, BUT IF YOU SPEAK TO A TECH THEY WILL EXPLAIN IT TO YOU, MAYBE, OR MAYBE PARTIALLY.  AT ANY RATE; IT JUST MAKES ME SICK!

Good luck and automotive peace to you.

I Think – Actron’s NEW CP9695 Auto Scanner Pro also does ABS brake Bleeding, but I’m waiting to hear back from them. CP9695 costs around $400.00 but has more functions; types of vehicle covered; and more bells & whistles than the MaxiCheck Pro. The absolute best thing to do is check with the manufacturer to verify if they’re unit does ABS Brake Bleeding.
