Can iMac 5k 2017 upgrade to i9 processor?

I would like to upgrade the CPU of my mid 2017 imac 5k retina (3.8 GHz Intel Core i5 with Radeon Pro 580 8192 MB) to the i9 9900k or 9900kf cpu. Is this possible? I believe that the pinout for both these chips is the same, but I’m not sure if the chipset will accept the new cpu and whether my current motherboard will be able to utilize the full power of i9 and the OS will be able to handle it.

Sorry just not possible!

This series is limited to what Apple released iMac18,3. In this case the best you could install would be a 4.2 GHz Core i7 (I7-7700K).

While all of them use the same socket (FCLGA1151) The RAM speeds are also different DDR4-2133 Vs DDR4-2666 the logic board is not able to support it. And lastly the TDP this system requires is 91 W Vs the hotter 95 W CPU’s. The systems firmware won’t recognize the CPU.

If you have the equipment and tools to flash the ME region with new CPU power sequence, give it a try. There is nothing to lose.

How about writing something up on how to do that. I would be very interested on knowing how you would attempt to reprogram the EFI.

Simple drag and drop method to rebuild the corrupt ME region. To rewrite the firmware with device ID and component ID need some time to study. I did not work for 6 months just to figure out how the timing work, what is the code to write and finding the data is the worse nightmare. I am trying to upgrade the 2017 MBP storage but cannot find the chips on the market except I buy the expensive SSD drive with over $400 to pull the chips. It cost almost double the price because of the supply problem. I need the 48 Layers MLC NAND flash with 168 Pin 3Gb Samsung K9UUGY8 which is 500GB capacity each. No data sheet for the NAND flash from any manufacturer as they are keeping it confidential but supply only to the big ones.

The 2018 & 2019 500GB chips are available in the market but no 1TB unless order massive quantity with direct contract.

I will appreciate if anyone with experience on NAND can provide information but not lucky until this moment.


This doesn't really help as you need the resources from the given system and if the system was not sold with the given CPU you would need to create the needed resource or salvage a system whit the needed EFI to then copy off. You also need a programer and access to the needed chips and lastly a Windows system for the reprograming tools you need. And you still need to remove and then replace the EFI chip with a good soldering iron or hot air station.

This is way harder than what this vid implies. And given most people here are only doing their own system would be more costly than its worth. This would be a very big reach for them.
