Upgrading SSD and HDD to dual boot MacOS and Windows on each drive

Hello,

I have an iMac 2017 27'' base model with 1TB fusion drive (iMac18,3) with an external SSD connected to the USB to dual boot Windows.

I'm thinking about installing a 1TB OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD M2 blade to replace the fusion 28gb cache and a 1TB SSD to replace my HDD and I have a couple of questions.

- Does anyone know if the OWC Aura Pro X2 is compatible with my Mac?

- If I wish, can I build a 2TB fusion drive with the Aura Pro and the new 1TB SSD?

- Can I install MacOS Mojave on the Aura Pro and Windows on the SSD and dual boot it?

The goal is to install each system on each drive and dual boot it.

- Can I install Windows directly on the SSD using the Mac? I currently boot Windows from an external drive using "Windows to Go” but I'm worried in case I need to format the Windows SSD, if I'm gonna have to open the computer and remove the drive to do the process again.

Yes, you can use the OWC Aura Pro X2 in your system. Here’s the guide you’ll need to follow to put it in iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display Blade SSD ersetzen

You will need to break the Fusion Drive set before you start and I also recommend you make a fresh TimeMachine backup as well to be safe.

Split Your Fusion Drive Apart

And no, you don’t want a dual SSD Fusion Drive, that would be slower than running each discreetly. The problem you are facing is the I/O speed of the interfaces (not the drives in this case) becomes the bottleneck! How to achieve the best transfer speeds with external drives, while this is more focused on external drives the I/O issues is the same internally as well. So what you can see here is if you want something faster than SATA you need to get to a faster I/O channel in this case Thunderbolt, but that in its self doesn’t overcome the limits of the discreet drive’s I/O and its technology. This then gets into RAID where you aggregate multiple drives to gain better throughput. So a single SATA or even PCIe/NVMe SSD’s limit is over come.

While that solves the drive config, you’ll still have issues with running macOS and Windows in the way you want.

I would recommend you re-think your config. I would still do a dual drive setup. I would leverage the PCIe/NVMe drive as a dual boot running BootCamp so you can run both macOS & Windows on it. The next aspect is where you store your apps & stuff! Here you want to limit the blade SSD to host your OS’s & Apps, leaving most of the drive empty! Then use your SATA SSD as your data store for both macOS & Windows. This is where I would partition the drive into two volumes one for macOS (GUID) and the other FAT32, exFAT or NTFS (depending on what your needs are under Windows).

If you really want fully isolated MacOS and Windows environments you could partition the blade SSD into two partitions. Frankly I don’t recommend this.

That was some solid advice! Thank you! I'm gonna follow your suggestion. Even the link about on how to achieve the best speed with external drive was useful because booting from external drives is always an option for me. I can't thank you enough.

Where did you find this? Here's what is supported: Install Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp Assistant as you can see all of the iMac's you listed are all supported!

You can't really do a a two drive setup with BootCamp, BootCamp must be installed on the boot drive with macOS. But what you can do is setup a dual boot setup where each drive (or partition) is discreet macOS on one and Windows on the other straight up! But you loose the primary benefit of BootCamp having the ability to slide in and out between the two environments as well as copy/paste between them. The only thing you could do if you have a lot of Windows stuff is to setup the second drive as a Windows data drive.

@vv2vh - Review this OWC product listing here: OWC AURA PRO X2. I've installed a few without any issues running BootCamp so I'm not sure what the issue OWC encountered and it maybe the ones I had done where the older models.

Then I would say your only option is putting in a REAL Apple SSD fro BeetsTech Apple iMac SSD's
