1 Will the DVD drive work after upgrading to an SSD?
Hi,
I have an iMac mid 2011, 21.5, 2.5Ghz, Core i5, EMC 2428 and it runs out of security coverage on November 30 2020.
I was going to attempt to add an SSD along with my current HD, but that seems a bit difficult.
So I think it would be easier to replace the HD with an SSD. My Hard Drive is currently 500G and I think 1TB SSD should do the trick, as I am planning on using the desktop as a home server. I will also update the RAM to 16GB.
In any case after the upgrade to the SSD, will the DVD drive still function?

"It runs out of security coverage on November 30 2020" Somebody is giving you a bit of a scare here! As no one knows for sure what Apple will do. Besides many of the Apple apps have their own updates like Safari and iTunes.
Apple is still supporting the older OS's with security updates even through the system is on the Vintage and obsolete products list. So far Apple has supported the last OS a given system could support: macOS High Sierra (10.13) for quite a few more years given the change they are about to do. So I wouldn't worry about this yet.

Carnegie Mellon Univerisity is not Apple!
All they are doing is basing it on conjecture. Yes, Apple has followed a pattern in the past, thats not to say this time will be the same.
Do what you think makes sense for you to take care of your needs for the next two years. Don't worry about OS updates.

oh okay, well you're right about them not being Apple, I thought it was a sure thing, but I will still proceed on my current path, better to be prepared than not, plus I couldn't get a new iMac anyway, there is no place to put the old one. Also it's more efficient than my laptop, which is why I want to keep it in the family, so to speak. lol. I believe this path makes sense.
Sorry to go of tangent, but maybe you could offer an opinion on something else. The top of my screen has some kind of odd dark shadow. It's not on the outside because the screen is clean, but it almost looks like when something was burned and there is soot, but just really light impression of soot. That's the best description I can give. My only assumption is that it's from the inside and it has not progressed down the screen. It's just on the top. it makes a white screen look a tiny been like a pencil led has smudged the screen. I'm not sure what it is, but a guess would be nice.
