I can charge via charging port but not directly

So I can plug a usb from my ps4 to a charging stand and it will charge my controller. But if I use the same usb and plug it into a controller I get nothing. Which is kinda annoying because I have a brand new controller I can’t use bc I can’t connect it directly to the ps4. Anyone know why this would be happening?
