iPhone 8 Battery Draining Issues

Hi,

I’m new to the forum and I wanted to get some advice on steps to take for my iPhone 8. I’ve recently replaced the screen and battery within the phone and when i leave the phone (turned off) over night, from 100% battery it’ll be fully depleted and will require the cable to be plugged in to start the phone off again and charge the battery.

This is a fully working battery to my knowledge and has no signs of defects. What steps can you take to identify the issues and find out what’s causing the serious drain on the battery? I’m starting to think it’s something logic board related, but as i say, I’m new to this and I’m learning. I’ll take all advice I can get and steps to take to isolate the problem. If it is logic board I won’t be able to repair this myself as I don’t have the tools nor the skills to attempt this, but it would be nice to sell it on eBay as spares and repairs with some insight into what’s wrong with it for someone else to sort out.

Thanks for your time,

Craig.

It most likely a partial short on the logic board a VDD_MAIN, VDD_BOOST or another power line short would deplete the battery overnight.

To check this disconnect the all the LCD, home button and front camera flexes from the board and see if you get the same battery drain overnight. If you do it means you have a logic board problem. If it doesn’t drain it would point to a parts problem and the part can be determined by connecting one flex at a time and testing drain.

I think you could be right bud, I'm going to take your advice on board and see what I can find out. Thank you for this. I'll update this post at a later date with the results.

Hi mate,

I unplugged the cables as you said and kept the battery in the port. Its drained roughly 20% in around hours 2~ so I'd like to say this is a logic board issue? Any ideas on how to trouble shoot it from this point, as I'm keen to dive in and see if i can diagnose what part of the board might be causing the short.

@worldsend2020 The first thing you would need to do is check some power rails PP_VDD_MAIN and PP_BATT_VCC you would need a multimeter for this and a known good board or some board view software that has diode readings. There are many power rails you would have to check. Once you have found the rail you would have to diagnose which component on that line has become faulty, it could be an IC or capacitor. If you could not tell by a visual exam you would need a DCPS and a thermal cam or freeze spray to locate the fault.

@imicrosoldering thank you very much for the help mate, I'll dive in soon and see what I can find before having to sell it on. I've got that zxw software and a fluke 15b+ meter, so I'll compare the diode readings on that. One more thing, can you recommend any beginner material to microsoldering or anything logic board repair related? I'm still yet to acquire the tools to start learning this, but I'd enjoy having some good material to learn from momentarily. Thought I'd ask since you clearly know what you're doing. Thanks bud.

@worldsend2020 There are a lot of repair shops that put repair videos on you tube like iPad rehab, STS telecom and

Apfeldoktor. Nothing is better than practice though. Get some iCloud locked boards to practice on so you know what heat temperature to set your equipment on for removing various components and re-balling them and putting them back on so the phone still boots.

What is your battery health at? Go to settings-battery-battery health. Batteries, even rechargable ones degrade and go bad over time and need replacing.

The health is 100%, it's a brand new battery from GEARDO. I unplugged the battery overnight to see if it was potentially leaking, but when I plugged it in this morning it had the exact same battery % level. The results seem to be fine on 3utools also. Thanks for the advice though.
