What size SSD and RAM should I upgrade to?

So last month I decided to buy a Silicon Power DDR3L 16GB (2 x 8GB) RAM 1600MHz from amazon. I popped that in and my laptop worked great for a week or so. After the green light on my charge port was dim and my battery started to drain faster. I decided to get a new battery. Didn’t fix my dim charge light. So i bought a new 85charger. That didn’t work. I put the stock RAM back in and my charger worked again. I returned the RAM. NOW i want to upgrade my HD to SSD and also my RAM, maybe 8GB (2x4GB)???? I just need some suggestions. Does this sound like a better idea? What size SSD should I get? Please Help

Update (08/21/2020)

So I copied and pasted it in the USB drive and the original is 5.03 GB and after I pasted it in a USB to USB has the install macOS Sierra at 5.03 GB as well

For RAM I would get it to 16 GB (2x 8 GB SO-DIMM’s) Here’s the needed RAM PC3-10600 8 GB RAM Chip

You have quite a few options here for SSD storage! You can go as low as 256GB to as much as 8TB. I would go with a 1TB if you can, 512GB is also very good!

Now you do have a few hiccups here you’ll need to deal with.

The first one is the original drive your system has was only SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive which didn’t push the HD SATA cable to its limit. A modern SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) SSD which your system can support will over saturate the cable. While it will appear to work it won’t be stable. You really need to replace the cable with a better one MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable and yes this is the 2012 model which is the better one.

Even still you also want to improve things a bit, We want to place a stip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable rests to protect it from the rough aluminum surface. Here’s the guide: MacBook Pro (15 Zoll, Ende 2011, Unibody) Festplattenkabel/Infrarotsensorkabel austauschen and here’s a bit more on the cable issue Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb

We still have one more issue with the cable In the process of putting it in we find people over bend it which damages it! There’re fine foil wires inside which fatigue from creasing. To properly bend the cable we want a nice arc not a sharp fold! To make it easier I recommend you find an old BIC pen ink straw to use as a forming brake. Using the straw to help form the bend where the cable bends around a corner. Also don’t bend the cable at the drive connector either.

OK, last two issues! I promise!

You’ll want to create a USB thumb drive OS installer and you do need to make sure you use a fresh installer as Apple expired many of the ones people have now. If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today. So that gets into what to use on your system. I recommend you stick with Sierra 10.12.x.

While you could go with High Sierra 10.13.x I don’t recommend it! Apple forces you to use a newer file system APFS Vs the older HFS+.

SATA based systems like your MacBook Pro don’t play well with APFS and Apples first release of APFS was not very good either.

So here’s the needed OS download How to upgrade to macOS Sierra. Jump down to Step 4 and click on the Blue URL link labeled Download macOS Sierra

Once you have it you’ll may need to unpack it double clicking on it then take the dmg file placing it on a a freshly formatted USB thumb drive GUID - Journaled file system. Then follow this guide to convert it to a bootable installer How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive

Oh man . Im sure its doable but for someone new to all of this fixit yourself its going to be a bit of a nail bitter. Do you think I’d be able to purchase the parts and have someone professional do it for me or am I over thinking it?

So I wouldnt be able to just buy the RAM and SSD and thats it? I appreciate you helping me. Also right now im running the 10.13.6 macOS High Sierra. Do I still need to do the download?

Do I install the RAM and SSD then do the Software?

@lorenzodlc89 - Take a deep breath! I know its a lot of info to consume! Sorry ;-{

You can do this! It's not hard its being careful and taking it in steps!

● Start with the RAM get it working first!

● Once its in and working, tackle the cable next! Once you get it in put your HDD back in. Is the system still working? I bet you it is!

● Next or first step create the OS installer drive.

● Now install your new 2.5" SSD. Restarting your system with the OS installer plugged in. Format the drive GUID with a Journaled File System using Disk Utility and then run the OS installer.

Let's add something here as you might have some stuff you want to restore from your old drive. Getting this SATA to USB adapter will allow you to access the files which your new drive installed StarTech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter cable

Ok Dan. Purchasing that hard drive cable. Should I go ahead and download that macOS installer and transfer to a usb before dealing with the internal pieces? they should be in by next week.

I'm not going to transfer anything from my old drive to the new so I wont have to do the end part right?

By chance do you have an Instagram or some sort of social media page we can communicate back and fourth faster on?

von

Sure you can setup the OS installer USB thumb drive now.

No I'm on any social media accounts, I wouldn't get any work done if I was ;-{

von

Sounds good.

Email address? phone number? I just want to be able to get a hold of you if i have a quick question or something. I really appreciate you helping me and after I get everything set up I'd like to venmo you something for your time.
