Replaced the battery and saw smoke

We got a used Macbook a couple of weeks ago that wasn't holding a charge long. So I decided to change the battery, but as soon as I plugged in the new one, there was smoke coming out of the area indicated. I pulled it out immediately, then put it back in, and I guess it was done burning up because it didn't smoke this time. But it's definitely not working now when I plug it in. Help!

Oh God.

Well… good luck I guess… because that board is fried. I’d have someone else do it, that’s for sure

Yup, apparently so :( Found someone who is fixing it for less than the part I needed. Guess he has connections probably.

I would defiantly return that battery.

Please put the old battery back in and down this gem of a program called Coconut Battery and post your results.

It's fried. It won't start so I can't do that.

It won't start with the mag-safe plugged in? If so you have bigger issues not related to the battery.

No, it won't. I replaced the battery, but the burning did not come from the battery. I am thinking something in the logic board fried. (see pics)

You will need to find someone that does component level board repairs. Due to the age of this machine this may not be a viable alternative. See if you can find a reasonably priced replacement logic board.

PowerBook Medic does this type of board repairs.
