Problems with hard drive replacement

I’m trying to put a different hard drive into a MacBook Unibody that a friend handed down to me (the silver one), but whenever I try and boot up the MacBook off the hard drive, I get a prohibitory symbol.

The hard drive I’m using is a Crucial 2.5 inch SSD BX100. It was installed in a different MacBook (white unibody, 2009). That 2009 white MacBook is no longer working, so I thought it would be a simple matter of taking the SSD out of the white MacBook and popping it into the silver one. This didn’t work.

I still have the original hard drive that came with the white MacBook, and the silver MacBook will boot up off of that original HD. But I want to install my SSD because it’s what I’ve been using for the last five years.

What do I need to do to get my SSD to work in the silver MacBook? TIA.

The prohibitory symbol usually indicates an incompatible OS that's installed on the boot drive. What version of macOS is on the SSD?

Thanks for the reply - that makes sense. The SSD has Sierra, which seems like it's incompatible with the silver MacBook I'm trying to use now (on initial google search).

If that's the case, then it seems like my options are either:

-Continue using the old HD from my white MacBook (running Yosemite) which will probably be fine (I'm not doing any sort of video editing, etc on this laptop.)

- Find some way to make the SSD work in the silver MacBook. Not sure if this is possible, or if it's worth it.

ok so a few things, do you have your OS installed on the SSD? Also why did the white one stop working? what was wrong with that? Because the SSD could have been the issue on the white one.

Update (10/06/2020)

alright so i can suggest two things, first try to install a fresh copy of the os you plan on using, and try that. If that doesnt work if you can get a drive reader. like this photo provided for example and download a program called crystal disk and run a scan on the drive and see if their are any errors on the drive,

Thanks for the reply -

The SSD has Sierra. Running Yosemite on the old HD.

The white one stopped working because of water on the keyboard - the b,n,m keys stopped working but the rest worked fine. Then the display started having these strange blinking white streaks. But aside from that, the laptop would turn on and work fine. I thought about replacing the display and keyboard, but then a friend offered her old silver MacBook so I thought I'd try and make that work.
