mower clicks several times before starting

Simplicty consumer zero turn with 20hp Vangaurd. I replaced engine with identical engine from parts machine. starter has always clicked at the starter several times before cranking and starting. so I replaced starter with one from the blown engine. It does the same thing except now it is the solenoid that is clicking.

@moosecow what happens when you bypass the solenoid? Does the starter work when you try that? You double checked all the wiring to make sure it is all snug and properly connected? Good battery?

The solenoid will always "click". That is what they do. It moves the pinion into the motor flywheel so the starter can turn it. It also connects the started to the battery. So, if the solenoid is clicking then it either isn't pulling in far enough to engage the starter switch or the battery isn't connected to the switch.

You don't seem to understand with one starter the starter would click before starting NOT the solenoid. after changing the starter now it is the solenoid that is clicking.

No, you are not understanding how the system works. The starter doesn't "click", it rotates if power is applied to it. The solenoid must activate for power to be applied to the starter. The "click" you hear it the solenoid moving the pinon and activating the starter switch.

Most solenoids have 2 coils and 2 switches. The 1st coil is activated by the ignition switch (low current). The 2nd coil is activated by a switch in the solenoid (high current). The other solenoid switch activates the starter (very high current) when the solenoid fully engages the pinon gear. If the 2nd coil is not being activated, either because the switch in the starter is bad or the coil is open, the solenoid won't fully engage and the starter won't turn. The starter cannot run unless the solenoid activates it. Therefore, the starter isn't clicking. Got it? I know this because I had a starter with an open 2nd coil on a 1978 Dodge Charger.

Thank you Bill for your patience in dealing with me as I am horrible with electrical issues. It sounds like you ruled out the ignition switch. I changed the solenoid with a used one from my parts machine and I get the same clicking from the solenoid. So I jumped solenoid large post to large post as suggested by oldturkey and it seems to crank every time . Do you think I am dealing with two defective solenoids ?

the low voltage wire creates a magnetic field kicking the starter gear in and....connects the contacts at the end of the solenoid at the two large bolts. after a lot of use the connector plate or bolt ends gets worn and wont make contact. removing the end of the solenoid and loosening the two bolts you can push them slightly out and rotate them 90 degrees too the unworn side of the contact bolt. the bolts are square on the inner end and inset to the cap.

good luck

to test hold the key on and jump the two bolts at the back of the solenoid..if the starter turns you know the internal contacts are not making

@moosecow I suggest you follow the trouble shooting from B&S and see what you come up with. Could be a bad solenoid could also be a starter issue. I'd hate to suggest something willy nilly that will just waste your time and money.
