My VCR turns off after about 3 seconds, and then starts flashing the CST.in light. I don't visibly see anything caught inside, even after taking off the case. It does take tapes but due to it shutting off and not turning back on, I have to open the case and fish it back out. I have found people online with similar issues, but none of them helped me.

The tray that the tape sits in and moves it may be out of sync or position.
Unplug it, put your fingers in like a cassette sort of & try to push it back in, then pull it back to the front of VCR.
This may do the trick.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. There is a belt which makes the tray eject, and whenever the unit gets plugged in, it rotates that belt and causes the tray to jam, and not accept tapes. If I go into the VCR and rotate the belt in the other direction, it frees up the tray and then I can do that, but still no dice unfortunately.
