iPod Classic no response

My friend gave me an iPod classic he didn't use anymore. when I plugged it in, It started to bootloop like crazy. I left it plugged in for a while and let it do its thing, hoping it would turn on. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and suddenly I'm getting absolutely no response from the iPod. No charging screen, no bootlooping, I can't even hear the hard drive spinning (which I could before and it sounded like any old hard drive should). I've been wanting a classic for years and now that I have one I'm really hoping I can fix it without opening it up. Has this happened to anyone else?

But if the battery was bad would it even try to turn on and bootloop? It was doing that for probably a good 15 minutes until I unplugged it. I did notice that it died immediately when it was unplugged.
