Laptop won’t turn on

I am having trouble getting my laptop to turn on. The laptop is getting power and when I press the power button the power indication light on the side of the machine turns on, but the fans don’t start up. The screen doesn’t turn on and it doesn’t even seem to do anything.

I’ve disconnected the battery, and both hard dives. I’ve also swapped the RAM stick to the other port and disconnected the cmos battery, but it made no difference.

Where should I start looking?

Hi @pete27449,

Did you have both the main battery and the cmos battery disconnected at the same time?

If so, did you press and hold the laptop's Power button for a full 30 seconds before reconnecting the cmos battery and the main battery?

All the power has to be drained from the motherboard to reset the BIOS (in case it is corrupted preventing a normal start) and if you just disconnected the batteries it takes a fair while to do this. Pressing the power button forces the laptop to try and turn on (which obviously it can't), but in doing so it drains the power more quickly.

If still no good, then if the motherboard is an NM-B191 (printed on the motherboard itself), here are the schematics that may help.

Thanks @jayeff. I tried disconnecting both and holding the power button for 30 seconds. Then reconnecting the cmos and battery, but this had no effect.

There's a problem on the motherboard.

First thing to check is if all the voltage rails are OK when the laptop is first started.

On startup the IO chip (Input/Output) performs a POST (Power On Self Test)

This is to make sure that basically all the hardware is working before booting into an operating system.

Since the fan isn't starting it is early on in the POST sequence possibly even before the ram is checked as it isn't even getting as far as displaying a LED error code using the various lights e.g. Power, caps lock etc

Download the schematics and look at p.2 and p.3 to view all the power rail voltage values.

Of course it could also be a failed CPU but first things first.

Also visually inspect the motherboard for any heat stressed or burnt out components as if there are any it may save some time

It could be a faulty fan that is stopping the laptop from posting. You could try replacing the fan. I would also try testing the screen.

For what it's worth, I've had bad ram give me all kinds of strange symptoms over the years. Sounds like you only have one module installed (since you apparently swapped its location?). If you can get hold of a compatible module and put only that in as a test, that could be worthwhile. Good luck!
