Accidentally broke the press-fit connector, is their any way to fix?

Block Image

Edit: The problem area circled on the stock photo

Hi, this is probably a long shot but: I managed to destroy two of the pins on the ribbon cable plug on the motherboard side of my Pixel 2 while attempting a battery change. Removing the ribbon cable was especially difficult because the mid-frame was warped as a result of a (previously removed) expanded battery and (I think) heat damage. The device now starts but the display shows static and there seems to be no touch sensitivity. I suppose any sane person would give up on a device this old, anything important on it is backed up, but its brand new battery has let it sing its happy alarm song for days from its broken electronics bag of despair...

I guess there is no fixing this short of replacing the motherboard that probably costs as much as the entire device at this point?

hi jonathan, can you add a photo of the damage your talking about

You almost need a hand lens to see the problem, I am not sure even when my new device arrives I would be able to properly photograph it. But the image here from an online repair guide shows the relevant part. The two leftmost pins of the connector I have circled on the stock photo are broken off. I think it's likely many people who have had similar issues following repair have broken these pins and simply not seen them.

Edit: please see updated question for image. Midframe being warped is a separate issue that did not cause functional problems but made the connector harder to get at. I reseated everything and put the phone back together to store it, I do not think (but cannot say for sure) that there is any damage to the ribbon cable side.

Hey, there Jonathan,

Sorry to hear that your repair didn't exactly go as planned. So the connector that you're saying is damaged is called a Press Connector, and that specific connector is for the Pixel 2's display. To answer the core of your question, you do have an option other than replacing your device's motherboard. The only caveat to successfully repairing the board is that you will need Micro-soldering experience and a replacement connector.

I am having some trouble finding a place where you can purchase the connector itself, however, you might have an easier time attempting to transplant the connector from an otherwise broken motherboard.

I don't have micro-soldering experience but this might be an opportunity to learn, those videos are very interesting! Only trouble is I am having a hard time finding a broken Pixel 2 motherboard and it doesn't seem right to ruin a perfectly good one for this. I will keep my eye out though, thanks for the answer and links!

@jonathanle60311 Ebay is a good resource for finding parts for this kind of stuff.
