Why Is My CPU Clock Speed Very Low When Plugged In?

Hello,

I have been using an HP EliteBook 8560p for a while now. It performs tasks very well when on battery power, but when plugged in, it becomes unresponsive and unusable. It was hard to get the task manager screenshot, but I managed.

For some reason, the CPU is at 0.11 GHz when plugged in, but it goes to around 1 GHz (an average speed on the desktop with all apps closed) when on battery power. Can anyone explain and help me solve the significant slowdown of the CPU when plugged in? Thanks.

Here is a picture @oldturkey03,

I decided to check the motherboard's make and model from Windows, and the make is Hewlett-Packard with the model number 1618.

It might be because of tempature, try to clean the fans but that might not work

von

@hampter According to HWMonitor, my CPU and GPU are chilling at around 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, my fans are quiet, so heat should not be the issue. Plus, I cleared the fans out a couple of months ago.

@hampter Are there any other solutions I could try?

Hi @tanveerzubair I assume the charger charges the battery properly. Try shutting down, take the battery out and plugin the charger and bootup. Does it power up O.K.? Any difference in speed?

von

@aactech, it has improved and it does not stay at 0.11 GHz. But when I am doing heavy tasks, it does not even go over 1 GHz at all, being slower than when on battery power.

I know one of my dell laptops has a chip that limits the cpu speed when plugged in.

It does that for fast charging? Also, I do not think this technology was a thing in 2011.

Also, read the latest comment from me in @oldturkey03's answer.

@tanveerzubair maybe not. the laptop I have that does that is from 2010.

von

@betatechlabs, interesting. But my laptop works fine when the charger is not fully slotted into the port. Could this be a problem with the charger?

von

@tanveerzubair Does it charge when not fully plugged in?

@tanveerzubair there have been issues with Toshiba's and HP before, that manifested just like that. Worked great while running on battery but failed miserably on DC-In. I seem to recall that the issue was bad capacitors on the CPU VCC rail. Check your motherboard and take a look around. Even better, share with us and let's see if we find some obvious stuff. We will also need to know what make and model the motherboard is. Who knows, somebody may actually have schematics etc. for the Beast :)

I actually do not know what a CPU VCC rail is. May I know what it is, and where it could be on the motherboard?

von

@tanveerzubair that is your core voltage for the CPU, commonly around 1.5V. There is no specific place for it, but it is more of a circuit to your CPU. Hence the need to find out what make and model the motherboard and to determine if schematics are available. You can then check the components along the VCC circuitry. You should find most of that circuit around your CPU but it will also come from the power rail.

von

@oldturkey03, where could I get the make and model of my motherboard?

von

@tanveerzubair it should be printed on the board itself. Most likely on the side the faces the keyboard :-)

von

@oldturkey03, I have added an image and some information on my question.
