Can I update CPU, memory and SSD of my iMac Pro?

hi guys, thanks in advance for any suggestions and answers.

I bought an iMac Pro a couple of days ago. the CPU is 10-cores of Xeon W-2150B, the memory is 64GB, the SSD is 2TB. The speaker is much better than my 2019 iMac. I am an OCDer, I want to upgrade it to top specs and keep it. but I want to confirm some details before I start to do it.

Does anyone know if mine supports 18-Core Xeon W-2191B and 256GB memory? and, it looks very hard to get the Apple SSD like 4tb. Where can I buy 2pcs?

Here is a detailed listing of the iMac Pro systems

I wouldn’t be to quick going for the 18 core. When this system was designed the Intel chip logic was still struggling with its architecture.

Unless you are rendering or working in the medical field working with CRISPR having more cores and loosing clock cycles doesn’t offer most people the performance they are thinking would be gained.

128GB of RAM likewise is also no slouch! Review your Apps and work, even with my 2013 Trash Can doing heavy graphics work I haven’t needed more RAM. But onboard storage is a never ending desire for sure! But Apple went proprietary Flash modules, not a true SSD! Review this iMac Pro Teardown

So the bottom line here is other than the RAM, the Cost - Benefit is just not there besides the risks of damaging something in the process which would not be good.

So while it’s nice to have an expensive Bugatti racing car, getting serviced or even driving it on the streets and dirt roads won’t push it to what it was designed to do.

Hi Dan, I totally agree with your point. for the CPU I can put it aside. but the memory would be the first part I want to upgrade. because the iMac pro is a secondhand one, I have to think about if it's necessary to replace the SSD with a new one. will run disk benchmark first to find if the SSD can work well.

@aloms - Do take the time to review the Teardown I linked to. The Flash storage are custom part and just not available.

@danj cheers. already checked the link carefully. will upgrade CPU and memory first, the cost is acceptable. yes, the price of the SSD is too expensive.......

@aloms - I would just still with the RAM, there is very little improvement for better that 80% of the Apps you are likely to use, I wouldn’t waste my money on upgrading the CPU.
