== Identification and Background ==

The MacBook Air was introduced to the masses on January 15, 2008. It measures only 0.76" in thickness, a hair thicker than the diameter of a dime. However, Apple has managed to pack a 13.3-inch display, a full-size keyboard, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 802.11n Wi-Fi into a package that weighs 3 pounds.

Use the [link|/info/ID-your-Mac|laptop identification system] to help you identify your machine. MacBooks tend to look very similar, and it's important to know which machine you have before ordering any replacement parts.

There are a number of downsides to the portable nature of the MacBook Air. The RAM is soldered to the logic board, and there are no upgrade slots -- which means the user is stuck with 2 GB RAM. There is no built-in optical drive, preventing users from easily restoring their system. Worst of all (at least from a troubleshooting and repairing perspective), the lack of FireWire ports prevents utilization of the incredibly useful Target Disk Mode, limiting the ability to restore the Air's operating system and perform diagnostics without removing the hard drive.

Um CDs und DVDs zu lesen gibt es im Wesentlichen zwei Möglichkeiten: entweder du besorgst dir einen externen SuperDrive oder du benutzt Apples RemoteDisc. Mit Hilfe von RemoteDisc kannst du auf das Laufwerks eines Mac in der Nähe zugreifen. Das fremde Laufwerk wird dabei im MacBook Air eingebunden.

== Aufrüstung ==

Leider sind RAM und Prozessor are nicht aufrüstbar. Aber manche Bauteile lassen sich doch verbessern:

Das MacBook Air erschien am 15.Januar 2008 auf dem Markt. Er ist kaum dicker als ein Centstück, nämlich 19,3 mm. Trotzdem ist es Apple gelungen ein 13,3 Zoll Display, eine komplette Tastatur, einen  Intel Core 2 Duo Prozessor, 2 GB  RAM und 802.11n Wi-Fi bei einem Gewicht von 1360 g einzubauen.

Benutze [link|/info/ID-your-Mac|unser Laptop-Identifikationssystem] um dein Laptop genau zu bestimmen. MacBooks sehen oft ganz ähnlich aus, es ist aber wichtig, den genauen Typ zu kennen, bevor du Ersatzteile bestellst.

Es gibt auch einige Schattenseiten des MacBook Air. Der RAM ist fest mit dem Logic Board verlötet, er kann nicht ausfgerüstet werden und bleibt auf 2 GB beschränkt. Es gibt kein optisches Laufwerk, um das System gegebenfalls zu restaurieren. Am Schlimmsten (jedenfalls unter dem Aspekt des Reparierens) kann durch das Fehlen der  FireWire nicht der äußerst praktischeTarget Disk Mode benutzt werden, ohne dass die Festplatte entnommen werden muss, wodurch die Diagnose- und Reparaturmöglichleiten des Systems stark eingeschränkt werden.
