== Background Information ==

First used in the second generation of computers back in the 1950's, [link|https://www.ifixit.com/News/97850/soldering-simplified-a-newbies-guide-to-through-hole-soldering|through-hole soldering] is the simplest form of soldering in which leads on the components are inserted into plated through-holes (PTH). The leads are then soldered to pads on the opposite side of the PTH.

Though it provides very strong mechanical bonds, drilling the additional holes in the printed circuit boards makes it much more expensive than other methods such as surface mounting.

The four basic safety rules:

* ***The iron is hot***. Very hot. You will burn yourself from time to time but these are rarely anything to be concerned about.
* ***Work in a well-ventilated area.*** The fumes are not fun.
* ***Always wear safety goggles.*** Flying molten lead hurts and both solder and flux can splash.
* ***Wash your hands, ya filthy animal!*** Leaded solder contains lead (!). 'Hobby'-levels of leaded soldering do not represent a significant health risk, although you should wash your hands after handling it, especially before eating, smoking, and interacting with children, who are especially sensitive to the effects of lead exposure.
** Solid lead cannot pass the skin barrier, it enters the body through ingestion or the mucous membranes, lead dust is dangerous because it can be inhaled, so you should take care when cutting or filing circuit boards (for example, when salvaging components).
** Soldering iron temperatures are not high enough to turn lead into a vapor so there is negligible risk of 'breathing in lead' - most of the smoke you see is the flux burning off.

== Equipment ==

Soldering only takes a little bit of basic equipment. You need a soldering iron to heat the solder, an iron stand to put the iron on so it doesn't burn the table, and solder.

=== Soldering Iron ===

A soldering iron is a pen shaped tool with a fine tip that heats up. One of the ways soldering irons are measured by is wattage. For most basic soldering, a 25 to 50 Watt soldering iron will work without any problems. Most irons are simple single temperature models, but it is also possible to buy advanced solder stations where you can directly set the tip temperature with a dial or knob.

A soldering iron stand is used to keep the hot tip of the soldering iron from burning the table or work surface when you set the iron down. They are often included with higher end soldering irons, but must be purchased separately with most budget models.

=== Solder ===

There are many different kinds of solder. The simplest type of solder is 60/40 flux cored solder. This solder is made of 60% tin and 40% lead. This kind of solder is inexpensive and easy to work with, however it does contain lead, which can be dangerous to work with if you don't follow proper safety procedures.

An alternative to leaded solder is lead free solder. This kind of solder is more difficult to work with but is better for the environment.

For someone just starting out and learning how to solder, using leaded solder will be much easier.

== Soldering ==

Now we get to the fun part, actually soldering. The first thing to do is to place the part on the printed circuit board. Make sure that the board and part are clean. Any dirt or debris on the board or the lead will prevent the solder from sticking to everything properly. It can also be helpful to use a small piece of either masking tape or electrical tape to secure the part to the board. You don't need to do this all the time, but if you have trouble with any particular part staying in place, it can help quite a bit. Finally, double check that the part you are soldering is in the right place on your circuit board, and that it is in the right orientation. Some parts, like capacitors, diodes, transistors and integrated circuits will either not work, or be damaged if they aren't put in properly.

Take the iron in one hand, and the solder in the other. When I solder, I hold the iron in my dominent hand, but you should try each way to see what feels best for you. Add a little bit of solder to the tip of the soldering iron. This is called 'tinning' the iron, and it helps protect the tip of the iron, as well as making it transfer heat better. Touch the iron to the joint that you're soldering, making sure to touch both the copper pad on the board as well as the lead on the part. The idea is to heat up every part of the connection to the same temperature so that the solder flows evenly into all the tiny spaces. After a one or two seconds, slowly poke the solder into the joint. If the joint is hot enough, the solder should melt and flow into the joint. You only want to add a few millimeters worth of solder, so don't go crazy. Once you add the solder, slowly pull the iron away from the joint, wipe the tip on a damp sponge, and place the soldering iron into its holder.

A properly done solder joint should look like a cone, with the sides of the solder straight. If they curve in, then there isn't enough solder on the joint, and you should add a little bit more. If it bulges out there's a little too much solder. If this happens, the best thing to do is desolder the joint with desoldering braid and try again. The joint should also be shiny. If it isn't, then the joint didn't get hot enough when it was melted. The way to fix this problem is to reheat the joint and try again.

Once you have a joint that looks good, that's it! Keep on soldering all of the other parts onto the board and you're on your way to having a working electronics project.

== Hintergrundinformationen ==

Die einfachste Form des Lötens ist die [link|https://de.ifixit.com/News/98654/loeten-leicht-gemacht-eine-einfuehrung-in-die-durchsteckmontage|Durchsteckmontage], auch THT-Löten genannt (von englisch "through-hole technology"). Diese Methode wurde erstmals bei der zweiten Generation von Computern in den 1950er Jahren eingesetzt. Dabei werden die Drahtanschlüsse der Komponenten durch die Löcher einer Leiterplatte gesteckt und auf deren Rückseite mit den Leiterbahnen verlötet.

Auch wenn bei dieser Form des Lötens eine besonders starke mechanische Verbindung geschaffen wird, ist sie deutlich aufwendiger als das Löten mit oberflächenmontierten Komponenten (SMD-Löten, von engl. “surface-mounted device”), weil ggf. zusätzliche Löcher in die Leiterplatte gebohrt werden müssen.

== Sicherheitshinweise ==

Wenn man keine geeigneten Sicherheitsmaßnahmen trifft, kann man sich beim Löten durchaus verletzen - man arbeitet schließlich mit sehr heißen Werkzeugen und geschmolzenem Metall. Pass also gut auf, dass du dich nicht verbrennst. Trage außerdem keine allzu lose Kleidung, die dir beim Arbeiten im Weg sein könnte, und falls du lange Haare hast, solltest du sie zurückbinden. Nach allen Lötarbeiten solltest du dir außerdem die Hände waschen; manche Lötmittel enthalten Blei, das sollte nicht in deinem Mittagessen landen.

Lötdraht (auch Lötzinn, Lötmittel, Lot genannt) enthält oft Flussmittel. Dieses besteht üblicherweise aus Kolophonium, einem Harz, und verdampft, wenn es auf die Schmelztemperatur des Lötzinns erhitzt wird. Diese Dämpfe dürfen nicht eingeatmet werden. Sie gehören zu den häufigsten Ursachen von arbeitsbedingtem Asthma in den USA. Wenn du nur zum Hobby (also nicht so oft) lötest, haben die Dämpfe wahrscheinlich keine so starke Wirkung und es kann ausreichen, ein Fenster in der Nähe zur Belüftung offen zu lassen und/oder einen Ventilator zu benutzen, der die Dämpfe von deinem Gesicht wegbläst bzw. -saugt. Wenn du auf Nummer Sicher gehen willst oder in einem eher industriellen Umfeld arbeitest, sollte eine N95/K95-Maske ausreichen, um die Dämpfe daran zu hindern, in deine Lunge zu geraten (dadurch werden allerdings nicht deine Augen geschützt). Aber auch Atemgeräte, die nur die untere Hälfte deines Gesichts bedecken, sind nicht zu teuer und die Filter halten sehr lange. Besorge dir Filter, die nach P95 oder P100 zertifiziert sind. Manche Leute verwenden auch nur eine Lötdampfabsaugung, einen Ventilator oder eine Hauben-Absaugung, um die Dämpfe von den Atemwegen fernzuhalten, aber wie gut diese Methoden funktionieren, ist sehr unterschiedlich. Deshalb empfiehlt es sich, zusätzliche Schutzmaßnahmen zu ergreifen.

Löten stellt ein Brandrisiko dar. Wenn ein heißer Lötkolben mit Lösungsmitteln, Teppichen, bestimmten Textilien oder ähnlichen Materialien in Berührung kommt, kann ein Brand entstehen. So ein Feuer entsteht meistens schnell - und du bist mittendrin. Besorge dir am besten einen Feuerlöscher und bewahre ihn an deinem Arbeitsplatz auf.

Die vier grundlegenden Sicherheitsregeln:

* ***Der Lötkolben ist heiß.*** Sehr heiß. Ab und zu wirst du dich wahrscheinlich daran verbrennen, aber diese Verbrennungen sind in den meisten Fällen unbedenklich.
* ***Arbeite nur in gut gelüfteten Räumen.*** Die Dämpfe sind nicht prickelnd.
* ***Trage immer eine Schutzbrille.*** Herumspritzendes flüssiges Blei kann sehr wehtun, und sowohl Lötzinn als auch Flussmittel können spritzen.
* ***Wasch deine Hände.*** Bleihaltiges Lötzinn enthält (Überraschung!) Blei. Wenn du nur zum Hobby lötest, sollte das kein Gesundheitsrisiko darstellen, aber du solltest nach jedem Kontakt mit dem Lötmittel deine Hände waschen, vor allem vor dem Essen, Rauchen oder dem Umgang mit Kindern, für die der Kontakt mit Blei wesentlich gefährlicher ist als für Erwachsene. 
** In fester Form kann Blei nicht durch die Haut in den Körper eindringen, sondern nur, wenn es mit Schleimhäuten in Kontakt kommt oder in das Verdauungssystem gerät. Bleihaltiger Staub ist gefährlich, weil er eingeatmet werden kann, deshalb solltest du besonders vorsichtig sein, wenn du Leiterplatten schneidest oder daran feilst (beispielsweise, wenn du noch funktionierende Bauteile aus anderweitig defekten Leiterplatten heraustrennst).
** Lötkolben werden in der Regel nicht heiß genug, um Blei verdampfen zu können. Das Risiko, Blei "einzuatmen", ist beim Löten deshalb verschwindend gering. Die beim Löten entstehenden Dämpfe sind größtenteils auf verdampftes Flussmittel zurückzuführen.

== Ausrüstung ==

Zum Löten braucht man nur eine kleine Grundausstattung. Du brauchst einen Lötkolben, um das Lot zu erhitzen, einen Halter für den Lötkolben, damit du nicht die Tischplatte versengst, und Lötmittel.

=== Lötkolben ===

Ein Lötkolben (auch “Löteisen”) ist ein Werkzeug, das ähnlich wie ein Stift geformt ist und vorne eine feine Spitze hat, die Lötspitze, die erhitzt wird. Lötkolben sind mit unterschiedlichen Watt-Leistungen zu bekommen. Für die meisten einfachen Lötarbeiten reicht ein Lötkolben mit 25-50 Watt. Die meisten Lötkolben erhitzen sich nur auf eine bestimmte Temperatur, aber man kann auch solche bekommen, deren Temperatur man über eine Drehscheibe oder einen Knopf regulieren kann.

=== Lötkolbenhalter ===

Im Lötkolbenhalter (auch “Lötkolbenablage”) kannst du den Lötkolben ablegen, ohne dass er die Tischplatte versengt. Bei den teureren Lötkolben sind sie meistens mit dabei, bei günstigeren Modellen muss man sie in der Regel separat dazukaufen.

=== Lötmittel ===

Es gibt viele unterschiedliche Lötmittel (auch “Lot”, “Lötdraht” oder “Lötzinn” genannt). Die einfachste Variante ist ein 60/40 Lötmittel mit Kolophoniumkern, das aus 60 % Zinn und 40 % Blei besteht. Das Kolophonium dient als Flussmittel (Flux). Diese Art Lötmittel ist preisgünstig und leicht in der Anwendung, allerdings enthält es giftiges Blei – du musst dich also genau an die Sicherheitsvorkehrungen halten.

Alternativ kannst du auch bleifreies Lot verwenden. Das ist auch besser für die Umwelt, ist aber schwieriger zu handhaben als bleihaltiges Lot.

Gerade für Löt-Anfänger:innen ist es deutlich einfacher, mit bleihaltigem Lötzinn zu arbeiten.

== Löten ==

Jetzt kommen wir endlich zum Löten selbst! Als Allererstes solltest du das Bauteil auf die Leiterplatte legen. Achte darauf, dass Leiterplatte und Bauteil sauber sind. Jegliche Verunreinigungen auf der Platine oder dem Drahtanschluss des Bauteils können dazu führen, dass das Lot richtig haftet. Außerdem kann es hilfreich sein, das Bauteil mit etwas Malerkrepp oder Isolierklebeband auf der Leiterplatte festzukleben, damit es nicht verrutscht. Das ist nicht immer nötig, aber wenn dein Bauteil partout nicht an Ort und Stelle bleiben will, kann das helfen. Letztlich solltest du nochmal überprüfen, dass das Bauteil wirklich an der richtigen Stelle der Platine sitzt und richtig herum ausgerichtet ist. Manche Komponenten, wie Kondensatoren, Dioden, Widerstände oder Chips funktionieren nicht, wenn sie falsch ausgerichtet sind, oder nehmen Schaden.

Nimm dann den Lötkolben in die eine Hand und das Lötzinn in die andere. Wenn ich löte, halte ich den Lötkolben in der Hand, mit der ich auch schreibe, aber du musst einfach ausprobieren, was sich für dich am besten anfühlt. Gib ein klein wenig Lötzinn auf die Spitze des Lötkolbens. Diesen Vorgang nennt man “Verzinnung” und er schützt die Kolbenspitze und sorgt für eine bessere Hitzeübertragung. Berühre nun die Stellen, die du verbinden willst, also den Draht des Bauteils ebenso wie das Löt-Pad auf der Platine. So sorgst du dafür, dass die zu verbindenden Stellen die gleiche Temperatur erreichen, sodass das Lötzinn sich besser in allen kleinen Ritzen verteilen kann. Nach 1-2 Sekunden kannst du nun das Lötzinn langsam an die Verbindungsstelle heranführen. Wenn die Stelle heiß genug ist, sollte das Lötzinn schmelzen und in die Lötstelle fließen. Du brauchst nur ein paar Millimeter deines Lötdrahtes, gehe also langsam und vorsichtig vor. Sobald das Lötzinn an Ort und Stelle ist, kannst du den Lötkolben langsam wegbewegen, die Spitze an einem feuchten Schwamm abstreifen und den Kolben in seinem Halter abstellen.

Eine gute Lötverbindung sollte kegelförmig aussehen. Die Seiten des Lötzinn-Kegels sollten dabei glatt sein; wenn der Kegel etwas eingedellt aussieht, ist nicht genug Lötzinn auf der Stelle und du solltest noch etwas hinzufügen. Wenn er sich an den Seiten nach außen wölbt, ist zuviel Lötzinn auf der Stelle. Wenn das passiert, ist es am besten, die Lötverbindung mit dem Lötkolben wieder zu lösen, das Lötzinn dabei mit etwas Entlötlitze aufzusaugen und es nochmal zu versuchen. Die Lötverbindung sollte außerdem schön glänzen; wenn das nicht der Fall ist, wurde die Verbindung beim Löten nicht ausreichend erhitzt. Auch in diesem Fall solltest du die Verbindung wieder lösen und es nochmal versuchen.
