Background & Identification ¶
A lock as defined by Dictionary.com is “a device for securing a door, gate, lid, drawer, or the like in position when closed, consisting of a bolt or system of bolts propelled and withdrawn by a mechanism operated by a key, dial, etc.”
A deadbolt lock is a lock that consists of pins, a lock cylinder, springs, screws, and face plates that are used to lock or stop movement of a door without a handle. The deadbolt lock is approximately six inches in length and has a diameter of around three inches. The color of the deadbolt lock changes with the consumer’s desire for design and style. This lock may only be operated by the use of a key and/or a rotary knob located on the inside of the lock.
Its main use is to hold a door closed and not allow movement of the door without permission from the owner of said door. This permission is given by a key which is a thin piece of metal that is cut and grooved to the lock. When the key is inserted into the assembly the cut grooves lift pins inside of the assembly. These pins, which resemble long cylinders, are moved to the sheer line which is the location of the space between the top and bottom pins. This intern allows the cylinder to move and thus put the lock into the open position.
There are times in life where access must be pulled from an individual and resulting in the need to change a lock to deny access. Re keying a lock yourself can be cost effective as you do not need to buy a new lock, hire a person to re key the lock, and/or change the look of the door. The importance of this process is included in both keeping cost down and maintaining the security of the lock. According to Kwikset Lock Company, there is the possibility that your keys have been copied or that spare keys have been made without your permission. For example, you may give your keys to an auto repairman, a valet, or many other people that may be able to take advantage of the situation by making a copy of the keys for themselves.
