My old xbox 360 controller was looking a bit dull so I used a T8 Safety Torx Bit to take off the plates, spray paint, and re-assemble. They look great now!

There's a screw hidden behind the sticker with the barcode on it behind the battery pack, presumably so you have to break the sticker in order to modify your controller.
