I had a similar problem with either my D40 and I think again with a D60 Nikon DSLR and I was told, or figured out that the shutter actuator rod (Don’t quote on name) which is a plastic rod that runs from the shutter button. inside the space where grip is, and they very often go bad. With mine the shutter button just didn’t move at all. (couldn’t push down). I believe, That rod connects to an electrical switch that actually trips the shutter. The camera shop I asked about this problem said they had to send to Nikon to get it fixed when it seems fairly straight forward to fix, except taking apart a SLR or a DSLR can be tricky because you have to disconnect some other parts to remove the housings from each other to get into where this part is located. So, take heed and look at as many repair tutorials or answers as possible to be able to correctly disassemble a camera, and take note of everything you do in disassemble to be able to reassemble and the camera actually get fixed and work.
