As Mayer said #1 cause is lid switch. i love vintage "repairable " washers. I recently had a weird cause of no spin on an '80s GE. I put a hamper of dirty cloths on top of the lid and it flexed the center of the lid down causing the lid switch pin to pull up enough to prevent spin. I tested the switch and it was all good then I noticed the lid was still pressed in. I gave it a bump and it popped back to slightly domed and tada everything worked. Over the years I've just cut the wires at the switch and added a wire nut to "fix" a bad switch or snapped lid switch pin. Don't do this at home. When I was a kid that switch didn't exist and we were smart enough to not reach down into a whirling 20 # load of cloths. Might just wrench your arm clean off. Nowadays humans aren't that smart so machines have to have loads of safety switches that often fail. Many new machines won't let you open the lid to add soap or laundry as the machine fills. That's to protect us from the hot water or possible drowning. On a grand...

Short answer: get a vintage washer that isn't as sensitive to an uneven load. Mine dances around but keeps spinning unless it is really off balance. Now some hints. On a top loader, position another identical pillow on the other side to balance. On a front loader you're out of luck as the pillow won't stick to the drum like wet cloths will. Unless what you are using is the same weight and holds the same amount of water it will shut down the over smart washer. See first comment. Other "practical hints" wash pillows and quilts etc at a laundry mat in their big machines. That usually works. Another trick is to hand wash in a tub or storage tote and then get a vacuum storage bag. Place wet pillow in bag seal and use a wet/dry shop vac to suck the air and water out. This is safer on your pillow than wringing out. once most of the water is out machine dry, if the care tag allows for this or hang on a cloths line on a sunny day. Regarding Modern energy efficient and low water use machines. Most don't wash well....

Buy a new plug at any place that sells hardware. Don’t buy the cheapest one but the most expensive one is not needed. They are usually around $6.00 Follow the instructions.. White wire to Silver screw, Black to Brass, Green to green. Make sure outer jacket is into end of plug housing and gripped. There should be no individual wires visible. Entire process about 10 min using wire cutter stripper, razor knife and appropriate screwdrivers. Good Plugs or Cord caps as they are known are made by Leviton, Pass-Symore Legrand and Hubble. All make different grades but Hubble is on the higher end.

Be very careful with this. Very high voltage from transformer and Capacitor. And you can cook yourself if you are not careful. Don’t test with door open. You really don’t want a microwave burn. That said, test the Capacitor. if it is bad they are not very expensive. Careful there also. It stores a very high charge. Next is the Transformer. I’ve seen them burned out. Check for open windings. Cooking dry stuff with out water in the unit will burn out the magnatron. An example of this is heating corn tortilla chips. They are so dry that much of the RF can return back to the magnatron back up the wave guide and kill it. To prevent this put a small cup of water in the corner of the oven to absorb the extra RF. This probably is not your problem but I will add that a very common failure point is the fuse caused by just opening the door too fast. If the door safety switches don’t close fast enough the fuse will blow as a safety fail-safe. Again this is a very cheap repair. And a common failure that puts many...
