If your Acer Chromebook Spin CP713-1WN-55HT turns on and works normally, but when you plug in USB devices, they are not recognized or do not respond, follow this page for possible solutions.
Debris or Obstruction in USB Port
Dust, lint, or small particles can accumulate inside the USB port over time, especially if the Chromebook is often used in environments like backpacks or fabric surfaces. This debris can block the internal connectors, preventing the USB device from making a proper connection. As a result, devices may not be recognized, may connect intermittently, or may stop working entirely.
Users should carefully inspect the inside of the USB port for any visible debris, dirt, or foreign objects. Signs to look for include buildup inside the port, bent or obstructed pins, or a loose connection when plugging into a device. If debris is present, it can often be removed gently using compressed air or a soft, non-metal tool. Care should be taken not to damage the internal components while cleaning.
Faulty or Incompatible Device/Cable
In some cases, the issue may not be with the Chromebook itself, but with the external device or cable being used. A damaged USB cable, worn connector, or incompatible device may prevent a proper connection, causing the Chromebook to not recognize it or to connect inconsistently.
To decide if this is the problem, users should try connecting to a different USB device or using another cable with the same port. If the new device works properly, the original device or cable is likely to be faulty. Additionally, testing the original device on another computer can help confirm whether it is functioning correctly.
Software or Driver Issue
Software errors or system updates can sometimes interfere with USB functionality, preventing connected devices from being recognized or causing intermittent connections. After an update or system change, the Chromebook may not effectively communicate with external devices, leading to inconsistent performance. To address this issue, restart the device to refresh the system and clear temporary glitches. Additionally, check for any available system updates in the Chromebook settings and install them, as updates may include fixes for known connectivity issues. If the problem persists after restarting and updating, further troubleshooting may be needed.
Internal USB Board Failure
Internal hardware damage can also cause USB ports to stop working properly. Inside the Chromebook, USB ports are connected to a small internal board or directly to the motherboard. If this part is damaged by physical impact, wear over time, or electrical issues, the ports may fail or work intermittently. In some cases, the system may not recognize any connected devices at all.
If multiple USB ports are not functioning and basic troubleshooting (such as cleaning the ports or testing different devices) does not resolve the issue, this may show an internal hardware failure. At this point, replacement or repair may be necessary. This could involve replacing the USB board, the power button board or, in more severe cases, servicing the motherboard. Because this type of repair requires opening the device and handling internal components, check out our Power Button Board Replacement Guide.
