System Starts and Immediately Shuts Down
If your system starts and then shuts down immediately you may have a bad CPU.
Faulty Cooling Fans
A common cause for the CPU not working is due to heat. The CPU generates heat, but if the heat goes beyond the normal amount produced the CPU could die. This is why it is very important to first check if the cooling fans are working properly before replacing the CPU. A simple way to know if a cooling fan is not working is if the laptop always seems to get hot and you never hear the fans kick in. The sound of fans turning on should be noticeable and if not, you could try putting your ear closely to the vent to hear and possibly feel the air coming out.
Bad Motherboard
A component such as the motherboard could cause the CPU to fail, if there is a bad capacitor. Since all of these components work together, if you see any deformities or a bulging out capacitor this could be a clear factor that it is causing the CPU to not function properly. You can follow our motherboard replacement guide HERE.
Aging of Components
Another cause for the CPU failing is due to time. If the system is over 5 years old the CPU could stop working at any time even if it is well taken care of. If the other most common underlying causes stated above have been discarded, this may be the next most probable cause. You can follow our CPU replacement guide HERE.
Blue Screen of Death
If your screen shows an error message with a blue screen this is usually referred to as the blue screen of death.
Recently Added Hardware
The most common cause for the blue screen of death is hardware being faulty. If you have done any additions in your hardware there could be a bad connection or the hardware installed may have been broken itself since the start. If you have done recent replacement or additions in hardware to your laptop it is best to go back and check all the connections and inspect for any abnormalities.
Your Computer has a Virus
If there are no hardware problems it is useful to check for any malware that could be affecting the system. This can be done by using an anti-virus program to scan for any malware that could affecting your computer. The steps on how to do this will vary depending on the anti-virus you purchase but they usually have a manual included whether it is a hard copy or an online step by step process.
Bad Motherboard
The blue screen of death will appear with an error message displaying a code. Write this code down and go to the official Dell website for help. Using this code you will be able to know other possible causes that could have resulted in the blue screen of death. If all other possible underlying causes have been discarded, you most likely have a bad motherboard. To replace the motherboard please follow our motherboard replacement guide HERE.
Dell Precision M4700 not reading CD’s and DVD’s
If your system is not able to read your CD’s or DVD’s you may have a bad DVD-ROM optical drive.
Dirty Disc Drive
Before following any procedures please insert multiple CD’s to discard the possibility of just one CD being bad. Once you have tested other CD’s and the system still can’t read the discs, you can try to clean the disc drive which may be dirty. A useful site with instructions on how to properly clean the optical drive can be found HERE.
DVD-ROM drive not found on Device Manager
If you insert your disc and the system is still not able to read your disc, you should click on the System Icon > Device Manager tab and the DVD-ROM drive should appear in the list displayed below. If the DVD-ROM drive does not appear, you most likely have a bad DVD-ROM drive. You can follow our DVD-ROM optical drive replacement guide HERE.
