Overheating With Casual Use ¶
Laptop constantly overheats and shuts down without warning.
Fans Not Working ¶
If you cannot hear the fan running, then it may have malfunctioned. The laptop will also remain hot after shutting down because the fan is not cooling properly. The fan must either be repaired or replaced to prevent further malfunctions. See this guide for a fan replacement tutorial.
Insufficient Thermal Paste ¶
If the fans are working but overheating persists, then the thermal paste may be faulty or worn. Thermal paste is the conductor between the heat sink and processor and aids in the cooling process. Resolve this issue with a reapplication of the paste following this guide. Use quality thermal paste for better cooling performance.
Dust Inside The Computer ¶
Over time, dust builds up in the computer and blocks the air vents. This may lead to the computer overheating and shutting down unexpectedly. Use a can of compressed air to clear the dust in the vent openings on the sides and back of the device.
No Sound Coming From Headphones ¶
When headphones are plugged in, they do not produce any audio.
Audio Port On Laptop Is Blocked ¶
Check if the audio is working on the built-in speakers by playing an audio track. If the problem occurs only with headphones, the headphone may not be inserted into the audio port completely. Dust and debris can prevent the jack from being inserted completely. Clean out the audio port and fully insert the headphone jack. If the issue persists, the port itself may be dislodged and requires replacement.
Audio Drivers Are Out Of Date ¶
The audio drivers may either be missing or require updating. Check if the drivers are missing or outdated by typing ‘Device Manager’ on the search bar. If there are missing or outdated drivers, go to the support page on the HP website and search the drivers section. Find the most recent audio drivers, download, and install them.
Failure When Booting ¶
After pressing the power button, the computer becomes unresponsive or fails when booting.
Hard Drive Failure ¶
If there is a clicking sound from the bottom of the laptop, this indicates the hard drive may have suffered physical damage. Recovering information that remains on the laptop requires professional assistance from HP customer support at 1 (800) 474-6836. To repair the laptop, replace the hard drive following this guide.
Power Cord Damage ¶
If the laptop is plugged in and there is no indicator that it is connected to a power source or charging, then the charger or the laptop’s charger port may not function correctly. Check for any damage on the power cord and replace it if necessary. If the issue persists, then the laptop port for the charger must be replaced.
Weak Or No Wireless Network Connection ¶
The computer fails to connect to the network or the signal strength is intermittent and weak.
Obstacles Between The Router And The Laptop ¶
Obstacles such as thick walls between the router and the laptop obstruct signal strength. Try to remove obstacles between the laptop and the router, and sit closer to the router for better signal strength.
If the connection is still weak, the problem may be due to the wrong wireless driver being installed, or even a failure of the wireless card itself.
Wireless Card Not Detecting Wireless Networks ¶
Your laptop cannot find any nearby wifi channels (denoted by a small red x inside a circle on the wifi icon). Turn on the physical switch for the wireless card near the power button and update all wireless drivers. If the issue persists then there may be a problem with the wireless card which then must be replaced. To replace the wireless card, refer to this guide.
Internet Service Provider Experiencing Downtime ¶
If the laptop connects to networks but does not have internet, the issue may lie with your internet service (you will see a small yellow caution sign on the wifi icon). If resetting the laptop, wireless adapter, router, and the modem fails to resolve the issue, then contact your internet service provider for more information.
Unresponsive Keyboard Keys ¶
The keyboard is damaged so the laptop cannot recognize keystrokes.
Keyboard Is Dirty ¶
The keys may require cleaning or replacement if the keys get stuck after pressing and the laptop does not receive any input. Try prying off faulty keys, cleaning the space, and reinserting the keys. If this does not fix the problem, the keyboard may need to be replaced. Refer to this guide for further instructions.
Built-in Keyboard Is Damaged ¶
Make sure keyboard drivers are up to date and test for input with an external keyboard. If it is only the laptops keystrokes that are not being recognized, then the keyboard needs to be replaced to function properly. To replace the keyboard, refer to the guide listed above.
