Wait at least 30 seconds and then reconnect the USB cords to the device. Now reconnect the power cord and press the power button to turn the device on.
If the problem still persists read on to next solution.
Update the printer firmware
The device could be shutting off because it may be out of date. You will need to update your firmware. To do this go to the HP Drivers & Downloads page on the HP website. Type in your printer model number and press "Go". Then select the operating system for the computer you are using. Scroll down until you see "Firmware" and click on the link. You should download the firmware and follow further instructions given on the screen to completely update your device.
Device Displays a Cartridge Error
An error code pops up saying it cannot read the ink cartridge.
Check cartridge compatibility
This could be caused from not having a compatible cartridge. Check that the cartridges being used are HP 21 Black and HP 22 tri-color (HP 21XL and HP 22XL produces 2.5x more printed pages).
If you have the correct cartridge you can continue on to next solution.
Remove, inspect, and re install the problem cartridges
Your cartridge could be compromised from any unwanted particles resulting in the device not recognizing it. Follow these steps to remove, inspect, and re install the problem cartridge. The error messages will indicate the cartridge that is the issue. Press power button to turn on product. Wait until the cartridge is idle and then open the cartridge door. To remove the cartridge, press down gently on the end of the cartridge and release it from the slot. Carefully slide the cartridge out to fully remove it.
- Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Do not reapply the tape to the cartridge. Doing so can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
Now inspect the cartridge by doing the following. Make sure there is no debris on the cartridge contacts. If there is debris, continue to Solution 3 for how to clean it. Then remove all protective tape from the ink nozzle. Once you are sure the cartridge is clean, compatible with your printer, and free of protective tape, reinsert it. Push the upper part of the cartridge forward until it clicks into place. Then close the ink cartridge door.
If an error code still appears continue to next solution.
Clean cartridge contacts
The cartridges may have dust or debris that is interfering with your device. You will have to clean off the cartridge contacts. Make sure the following items are available before you begin
- distilled water (do not use tap water because it might contain contaminates that may harm the cartridge)
- clean cotton swab
- clean paper towel to rest the cartridge on
First, open the cartridge door. Make sure the carriage is idle and silent before continuing. Remove the cartridge, and then place it on a clean sheet of paper with its nozzles facing up. Then unplug power cord from electrical outlet. To clean the cartridge contacts:
- Dip the cotton swab in distilled water, and then squeeze the tip to remove excess water.
- Hold by the sides of the cartridge and then clean the copper-colored contacts only. Do not touch or clean the ink nozzles.
Then place the cartridge on clean sheet of paper to dry. Allow 10 minutes for it to dry, and then re-install the cartridges. Close the cartridge door and then reconnect the power cord.
If the problem still persist continue to next solution.
Replace the problem cartridge
The cartridge may be defective and you will have to buy a new one. After you have a replacement cartridge you will have to re-install it. Press the power button and wait for the cartridge to be idle. Remove the old cartridge by pressing down gently on the end, releasing it from the slot. Then carefully slide the cartridge out to fully remove it. Now, install the new cartridge. First remove the protective tape from the cartridge. Slide the new cartridge into the empty slot and push it forward until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge door.
If the problem still persists you may need to service the product.
Won't Send or Receive Faxes

If the test comes out with all passes continue to the next step. If there are no passes then continue to reset the fax.
Reinitialize the fax
Make sure your device is turned on. Then unplug the power cord from your device and then from the outlet. Wait a few minutes before continuing on. Then reconnect the power cord to your device and then to the outlet. Wait for your device to completely turn on. Now try sending your fax again.
If the problem persists continue to the next solution.
Reset the fax
Your device may just need to be reset to restore your device back to its factory settings. First remove all paper from the tray. Then turn the device off and disconnect the USB from the back of your device. Now disconnect the power cord from your device and then from the outlet. Wait a few minutes. Now plug the power cord into the outlet and then to your device. Press the power button and wait for the device to completely turn on. Then reconnect the USB to the back of your device and load the paper in the tray. Now try sending your fax again.
If the problem still persists there may be possible underlying problems in error codes in fax communication.
Error Codes in Fax Communication
If you're having problems faxing and the above solutions didn't work then your device might contain communication errors.
Ensure cable is securely connected
It is possible that the telephone cable may have become unplugged over time, making it impossible for the printer to connect to the phone lines, which is required for faxing. Ensure that the RJ-11 phone cable is securely connected to both the printer and the corresponding wall jack. The fax port should be marked with a wall jack symbol, labeled "Line", or "To Wall Jack".
If your cable is securely connected and the problem still persists move on to next solution.
Is the cable connected to LIU?
The LIU might not be connected properly. The Line Interface Unit (LIU) is the link between your home or workplace and your telephone provider. The phone cable must be plugged into this device for the printer to have connectivity to the phone network. Make sure that the LIU, which is the box that the phone cord plugs into, is connected appropriately and that the LIU itself is securely connected.
If the cable is connected to the LIU and the problem still persists move on to next solution.
Are there any obstructions?
It is possible other devices may interfere with the transmission of faxes such as answering machines, splitters or ADSL filters. Remove any additional devices.
If there aren't any other obstructions or you have disable all possible obstructions read on to next solution.
Test with a working telephone cable
Your current telephone cable may not be working properly, you should test it to see if everything is okay. Replace the current RJ-11 telephone cable with another cable, preferably one that you know is already working.
Continue to next solution if the problem persists even after using a working telephone cable.
Call your telephone provider
Contact your phone provider and request that they test the phone lines for static, noise and interference problems.
If the problem persists after speaking with your phone provider you may need to service the product.

Your device may just need to be reset to restore your device back to its factory settings. With your printer powered on, unplug the power cord from the back of the device. Wait about 30 seconds and then plug the power cord into the back of the device. Press the power button and wait for the device to completely turn on. Try scanning a document.
If the problem still persists continue to next solution.
Check the power supply of the device
The device may not have a strong enough source of power. You might need the direct power from an outlet. Turn your device off and make sure it is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a power strip or surge protector. Power on your device and try scanning a document.
If the problem still persists you may have to service the product.
Scanned Documents have Lines and Streaks
If there are vertical bands, lines or streaks in your documents try the following solutions to fix the problem.

Wait about 30 seconds and then plug the power cord into the back of the device. Press the power button and wait for the device to completely turn on. Try scanning a document.
If the problem still persists continue to next solution.
Clean your scanner
Your scanner could have lint or dust obstructing it's abilities. Cleaning the scanner glass should remove any unwanted particles that might be causing the problem. You will need glass cleaner and a few soft, lint free cloths to perform this step. First, turn off your device and unplug the power cord and USB cables. Open the front panel of your device where the keypad is located. Underneath this panel you will find your scanner glass. Spray the cloth with the glass cleaner and then wipe the scanner glass. Make sure there are no streaks or residue left on the glass. Now look on the back of the keypad panel to find a white strip. Gently wipe down that strip making sure you don't leave any residue. After letting both surfaces dry close up the device and plug the power cord back into the outlet. Turn your device on and try scanning a document.
If your problem persists there may be an underlying problem with the scanner glass. Check out our replacement guide for the ADF scanner glass : HP Officejet J3680 Automatic Document Feeder Scanner Glass Replacement

I have an Officejet J3680 which still works perfectly. I have a new laptop running windows 11 and would like to continue using the J3680 with it. but I cannot find the software/driver to install on my new laptop. I went to the HP website & read that the J3680 has been retired & is no longer supported. How can I still use the printer then?
