Mouse or Keyboard Malfunction ¶
I move the mouse, but nothing happens.
Connection Error ¶
If your are using a Bluetooth compatible keyboard and mouse, make sure the provided USB wireless receiver is inserted into an open USB port on the computer.
Make sure the On/Off switch on the bottom of the mouse is in the On position, an LED light should illuminate.
Drained Battery ¶
Change the batteries and make sure they are correctly installed. You can find help replacing the batteries here.
Key is Stuck ¶
Remove the key and check that there is nothing stuck below it. To remove the key, press down on the front of the key you want to remove and insert a flat object underneath, such as a car key. Then, twist it or push up until the key pops off. You may need to clean the area with a damp cloth, cotton swabs, or compressed air. Once clean, snap the key back into place carefully by pressing on the key.
Mouse Does Not Track Well ¶
Clear or reflective surfaces can cause problems with the mouse's functionality. Change the surface underneath the mouse and clean the plastic lens on the bottom of the device. Try putting it on a white, opaque surface (such as a blank piece of printer paper) to ensure it is operating correctly. More help on this issue can be found here.
Audio Distortion ¶
Sound comes out, but its crackling and unclear.
Interrupted Connection ¶
Check to ensure any external speakers are fully plugged into the device in the correct speaker jacks. If it is loose it may cause poor connection quality. You can also try blowing into the jack to remove dust inside.
Bad External Speakers ¶
Try plugging in your speakers to a known working device (such as an iPod) to determine if it is the speakers or computer causing them to not work.
Computer Won't Turn On ¶
I press the power button and nothing happens.
Computer is Unplugged ¶
Check to see if the AC power plug is inserted into a functioning outlet or extension cord. You can check to see if the outlet is working by plugging a known working device into it.
Faulty Hard Drive ¶
If your computer is having issues during startup, you may need to replace the hard drive. Follow the steps to do that here.
Faulty Power Source ¶
Insert the AC power plug into a known functioning outlet to ensure the one previously used is working properly. You can check to see if the outlet is working by plugging a known working device into it.
Not Enough RAM ¶
If your computer crashes during normal operation, during memory intensive tasks, or will not start up, this could mean you do not have enough RAM. Follow this link to replace your RAM.
Malfunctioning Motherboard ¶
Your motherboard is the brain of your computer. If nothing happens during startup whatsoever, it may need to be replaced.
Computer Overheating ¶
The fan is extremely loud and computer is hot to the touch.
Clogged Vent ¶
Computers can overheat due to large amounts of dust in the fan/vent. Use a compressed air duster to blow out any dust that may be causing problems.
Broken Fan ¶
The fan inside your computer is used to cool its components while in use. If this stops functioning or functions improperly, it can cause your computer to become loud or shutdown. You can learn how to replace the fan here.
Insufficient Thermal Paste ¶
Your computer may not have adequate contact between the heat sink and processor. This can be caused by a lack of thermal paste or by air in between the two components. To fix this, completely clean off any old thermal paste using a couple drops of rubbing alcohol and wipe it off with a lint free cloth. Then, apply a dot of new thermal paste directly in the center of the processor and spread it around so that it is now an even layer. Gently push the heat sink back in place and tighten screws to lock down the heat sink.
Optical Drive Error ¶
I tried to put a disc in and the drive will not close.
Optical Drive Does Not Respond ¶
Restart your computer and check to see if is working properly. If it is broken, you can learn how to replace it here.
Disc Tray Stuck Open ¶
Restart the computer and see if the drive closes automatically. If that doesn't work, check to make sure no foreign objects block the drive from closing.
Disc Tray Stuck Closed ¶
Shut down the computer and unplug it from any outlet. Insert a paperclip or other small object into the manual release hole located on the disc drive. Push the paperclip in until you feel the drive release.
Cannot Connect to Wi-Fi ¶
My computer is on and won't let me connect to the internet.
Wireless Adapter Broken ¶
This desktop computer has a WiFi adapter included inside it. It may be broken or unplugged. Learn how to replace the Wi-Fi adapter here.
Incorrect Internet Connection ¶
Check which wireless network your computer is connected to. There is a chance that your desktop is connected to a different wireless network. You can try turning the WiFi on and off on your device so it has a chance to connect to a different network.
Insufficient Range ¶
The Wi-Fi signal may not be strong enough to reach your desktop. Consider moving the location of the desktop or Wi-Fi router.
