This troubleshooting page will help you diagnose problems with the Ridgid R2601

Device Won't Turn On

The sander will not respond or show any sign of turning on.

Dust is Inhibiting Power Switch

Dust could be trapped inside the switch. Remove top cover by unscrewing and clean around switch by blowing gently to remove dust.

Faulty Power Switch

If you have tried cleaning out the dust, the switch may be faulty and need to be replaced. Replace switch using this guide: Ridgid R2601 Power Switch Replacement

Faulty Power Adapter

If you have tried replacing the switch, but the sander still won’t turn on, the adapter may be faulty. Consider replacing the power supply cord using this guide: Ridgid R2601 Power Cord Replacement

Device Loses Torque or Stops Working When Applied to Surface

The sander slows down when in use and/or stops working

Faulty Sleeve and Bearing Assembly

Remove the padding on the bottom and check to see that the bearing assembly is sealed properly underneath and all ball bearings are in place. If not, remove and replace it.

Worn Down Brushes

Over time, the brushes can get worn down and can cause the sander to lose torque when the sander is applied to the surface . Order replacement brushes and replace.

Faulty motor

Strip the motor down and use a voltmeter to find out where a problem with the electrical connection exists, or check if your extension cord is too loose. If any problems are found it is likely the motor will need to be replaced with this guide here: link.

Variable speed dial does not work

Speed remains constant and does not respond when speed dial is used.

Variable speed dial is jammed

If the variable speed dial is jammed, check to see if there are no foreign objects blocking it internally by removing the top cover.

Variable speed dial is not clicking

If the variable speed dial is not clicking, it means it is worn down. You will need to order a replacement speed dial. Then replace the speed dial.

Sand paper holder came off

Loose/missing screws

Check to see that all of the screws are correctly put into place. If there are any missing, order a replacement. Re-screw any screws that are out of place or not tight.

Faulty brake disc

If the screws are all in order, you may need a new brake disc. Remove the screws from the hook and loop disc assembly, take off the hook and loop assembly device, then remove and replace the brake disc.

My sander makes noise every time I apply to the surface can you help pls

my 2601 sander spins the disk at high speed after I lift it off the surface and continues to spin at a high speed even after I turn it off. The problem this creates is when I put it back on the wood surface it puts swirles when the spinning pad hit the wood. Thanks

Ridgid r2601 sander?

bill bishop - Antwort

The Ridgid 2601 variable speed 5" hand sander is not engineered very well. when new, worked like a charm, loved the dust collection and the variable speed. My use is for small projects, and my use is infrequent. The first issue was the brake mechanism which stopped working which apparently is a common problem. This is the result of a poor design, the brake mechanism is stationary, rubbing agains the sanding pad, friction between the two wears it out, and with only a minimum amount of use! My porter cable hand sander has a belt mechanism that needed replacing after 15 years of hard use!

The second issue is that the sander will not take a load after it's soft start up. If the sanding pad is in contact with the work to be sanded, it won't start up at all, if not in contact the high speed of the disk damages the surface as it stops spinning. This is now about 2 1/2 years old! 2 Stars, because when it was new I loved it, but it's too high maintenance for me.
