What is this stain inside my display?

Block Image

Hi guys,

My Apple Thunderbolt Display has a stain from inside.

How I can fix it? I really believe it's on the glass as I took a screen shot of this area and the scree shot show pretty clean I mean, no stain at all. Does it make sense?

I'm afraid to remove the glass before to be 100% sure.

Tks a lot,

I suspect you have some fine dust caught between the cover glass and the LCD display unit. The static electricity tends to collect it there.

Sadly there is no guide to walk you though the steps. But there is a Teardown, It should give you enough help to pull the cover glass off (up to Step 3). Apple Thunderbolt Display Teardown. Make sure to use reagent quality Isopropyl alcohol with lint free wipes to clean the glass.

Hi Dan, thanks for helping me. I did what you recommend and I'm afraid that didn't work. Actually I didn't use reagent quality Isopropyl alcohol as I didn't have. I just cleaned it with those screen cleaners. Man... I'm so upset with Apple. That shouldn't happen... Do you think the reagent quality Isopropyl alcohol can be the solution? Can I also use it on the LCD panel?

Did you pop off the cover glass and clean it on the inside? You need as pure a cleaner as possible as anything in it will leave a mark. Be very careful cleaning the display. Apple uses a sticky roller so as not to scratch or leave a mark.

Yes, I did this time and the problem is still there. I took the glass out and I kept the Display on, and it's clear the problem is on the LCD panel, not on the glass.

It's a shame apple is not the same anymore. I'm very upset about that. Only this month I had 1 Time Capsule dead, 1 MackBook Air with Airpot Card replaced, my display now and my IPhone also sucks... Anyway, thanks a lot for your help. Take care,

Did you also clean the LCD? I use a very clean feather as I don't like touching it as it tends to spot from the finger oils and solvents. You may want to get a pair of surgeons (sterile gloves) to help minimize the oil marks.

If you are going to use surgeons gloves, make sure you get the powder-less ones. The kind with the powder will create more problems then they will prevent. Also, use LCD cleaner on the screen front, not alcohol. Alcohol is a solvent, not a cleaner, and not good for the polarized film on the LCD.

Change your screen color to white for a week or so and it will be gone.

Can you give the display a rest for a week or so, where it isn't being used at all?

I've had this same exact problem, a creeping something on the right side of the LCD. It has even grown over time.

But today I plugged in my Cinema Display after a week or so of not using it, and the crud is gone. After about half an hour it still isn't visible.

The dust, which makes the display cloudy actually is at the back of the LCD panel and on the backlight panel. It is possible to remove the aluminium panel case and open the LCD assemble. I used cotton cloth and a mixture of ethanol and denaturalized water (1:4) to clean those panels. Tricky it is, as there is glue and tape and magnets which try to confuse you. If you are careful and bring some engineering talent with you it is no big deal. Try to not bend cables, everything else is quite robust.

good luck!
