Why does it only turn on after reset of battery cable?

I have a macbook with a brand new battery, but its showin the same errors as with the old battery.

  • If i unplug the battery cable, and attach power cord - it turns on
  • If i then plug in the battery cable, and attach the power cord - it auto turn on the first time, but after i turn it off, and start it again.. Nothing happens.
  • Unplug the battery cable, wait some seconds and plug it in again, and it will start.

The same behavior with two different batteries seems to confirm it’s a board issue, probably at battery circuitry level where there are components that may have gone bad, there are a number of things involved, resistors, mosfets, an IC and some passives. It seems the board is in need of a component level repair or replacement.

I dont know if this has any meaning. But if i take the battery out, put the charger in, it starts up. I log into OS, and shut it down through the menu in the top left.

Now its shut down, with charger in, and no battery - but why cant it power on when i press the power button ?

@Simon Jensen It means something indeed, as power button enters in the picture too..without tests we're into speculation but power button on/off is related to SMC which is involved in battery charging and power rails creating. It's sufficient that one tiny component goes bad to create chain troubles to half board unfortunately.

But in this case, it couldnt just be the topcase (including keyboard) ?

We have access to an earlier apple software server, and it gives error on the batteri aswell - on the MRI test.

Same error, both the old and a completely new batteri.

@Simon Jensen Problem seems to be you have the "power on" issue even without battery attached. You didn't mention any keyboard problems when the Mac is in use, that makes me think the problem is restricted to power button only although you didn't say.

I'd be happy to be disproved by reality and it may very well be the case without any testing, but I wouldn't feel confident recommending a topcase replacement as best solution.

You're getting confused by the reaction of the system with and without the battery and the state the given battery is in.

Your logic board holds settings which needs power (NVRAM). The system logic board has capacitors which can hold a charge for a short while. So what can happen is the settings don't get lost when you disconnect the battery as the system is still getting power from your charger. If you disconnect the charger and quickly plug in your battery you might still beat the time it takes for the caps to loose their charge. In some cases if you press the power button you speed up the discharge of the caps.

Thats why your test is so confusing and doesn't tell you much.

How about getting a better view of things here. Install this app CoconutBattery take a snapshot of each battery while plugged in to the charger and post each here so we can see Bilder zu einer vorhandenen Frage hinzufügen now we have something to work with.

Thanks so much.

I still think its a board issue, and not the batteries. But heres where im really confused - why in earth does this power button not react, on anything - or any setup.

Let's get those CoconutBattery outputs so we can see what's happening. I'm not only looking at the battery but the charging logic as well.

It might be the power button on the topcase.
