iPhone 13 mini crashing and restarting constantly

My iphone 13 mini will crash and restart repeatedly. I can use it normally for hours or days, but when I'm having the issue the phone is barely usable for long periods of time.

It happens both off and on the charger. I'll be using it normally (or it will be sitting unused), and it will suddenly change to a black screen with a spinning wheel, shut off, and then reboot to my lock screen. Sometimes it will only do it once, but sometimes it will do it over and over again, for up to an hour. The phone is completely unusable while it's stuck in this cycle. It always gets extremely hot during. Charging or removing it from the charger sometimes makes a difference, but often doesn't. It sometimes makes a clicking/snapping sound when it's shutting off, similar to the haptic but louder.

I bought the phone brand new, and this problem started the instant the 1 year warranty ended. If it's a battery issue, I would like to take a stab at it myself, but someone else told me that the phone getting hot is indicative of a CPU issue. If it's CPU, I won't waste time with the battery. If anyone has any idea what the problem is, please let me know! Thank you!

ETA: panics and strings. They don't look very legible in the preview, so please let me know if I need to edit again.

Hi Kat,

I'd like to suggest you take a look at @flannelist's excellent wiki article on what's called a kernel panic; it's basically an operating system function that happens when it runs into an unrecoverable error. When one occurs, it logs the error and reboots the phone, which sounds quite a bit like what's happening to you.

iPhone Kernel Panics - iFixit

Read through to the part that tells you how to retrieve the panic logs and pull up the most recent one you find. Copy and paste or take a screenshot of the first page of that log (we don't need the whole thing) and come on back and add it to your question.

Adding images to an existing question - iFixit Repair Guide

Once we have the panic log, we can use that information to figure out exactly what is going on with your phone. If you want to try and puzzle it out yourself, the error information that's going to be usable will be documented on the SMC Panic Assertion wiki page, but we'll be happy to apply our experience and expertise to whatever you find.

iPhone SMC Panic Assertion Failed - iFixit

So your job now is to check to see if you have panic logs (I'm fairly sure you will), then grab us the first page and come on back and show us what it says. After that we'll help you figure out what you need to do to fix that troublesome problem once and for all.

Update (09/06/24)

According to the best information we have available (Apple keeps all this stuff under tight wraps), the SpringBoard error you're seeing is generally considered to be a software error rather than hardware, although you're right that the weird heating issue doesn't seem like something a software issue should cause.

Anyway, this kind of problem seems to have started with iOS 16 and the cure has generally been to update to iOS 17; of course that doesn't help you since it looks like you're already on the current release, iOS 17.6. So the next step, since you have a current backup, is to put the phone in DFU mode on iTunes and do a full restore of the OS. This is the most complete update possible and should get rid of any software issue you're seeing.

I would suggest NOT restoring your backup yet, but just enter your Apple ID and try using the phone as is for a couple of days to see if the problem is gone. If it's still there then we'll be really confused, but if not we can be fairly sure it was indeed a software problem. Next step would be to restore your backup and see if the problem reappears.

I'd say give that a try for a couple of days then come on back and let us know what happens. Alisha (@flannelist), do you have any other suggestions for Kat?

Jerry,

Thank you for the helpful response. You were right - I had 16 panics logged and the most recent was on Tuesday. I've modified the original post to add a screenshot of it.

It looks like it's a watchdog timeout with a springboard issue. I purchased this phone in January of 2023, after the release of IOS16.2, which, if I'm reading correctly, is a common cause.

My previous phone was a 5se, and I was religious about backing it up before every update, before getting the 13. The 13 has been an absolute b&$& to connect and keep connected to my windows computer. I was finally able to back it up to itunes for the first time about a week ago, frantic after the phone's latest 'panic'. Is the best route forward to factory reset, and then restore from backup, or would that just restore corrupted software? I don't know how to tell if that would even help, especially if it's a hardware problem, so I'll defer to your judgment.

@katiya In addition to my suggestions above, you might look through a few more of the panic logs in order of most recent and see if any of them say something other than the SpringBoard error. It's possible there's a hardware error buried in there somewhere in another log that could be contributing to the one you posted. If you find something different, go ahead and add it to the question as you did the first one; you did fine - it's perfectly readable when you click on the preview image.

@dadibrokeit I skimmed through all of the existing panic logs and they all mention watchdog/springboard. I didn't see anything else or anything mentioning sensor arrays, but I'll keep digging. How deep might a hardware error be buried in the log?

I've dropped my phone a few times. Never submerged in water, cracked anything, or opened it up (not sure if this is helpful info since I know hardware issues can occur without any of the above)

@katiya Okay, sounds like you've done enough on the panic logs; if there's something to be seen it'll always be on the first page of the log, so no need to try and read through the greek all the way to the end.

I'd say go ahead and search out "DFU mode" (Device Firmware Update) and use that to do your update. Try it out for a bit and see if that fixes it then come on back and let us know what happened.

Software issues can cause overheating and potentially fires, software controls the hardware , at least until something breaks the communication between the two. A malfunction with either or could lead to overheating potentially.

Hi,

If the phone was purchased new and hasn’t been opened up or suffered external damage then the first thing you should do is go to the Apple Store and ask for an assessment and based on the results , you could ask if they will provide an out of warranty claim.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain, they may even offer a discounted replacement.

If you they decline an OOW claim then you can start looking at what other steps to take.

Hope this helps

Sometimes its a hit and miss with the battery replacement just make sure you get a good high quality battery for it, It will give the error that its not genuine but it will work afterall. If it continues to get hot, then that will be a board issue. So 50/50 chance of it working and not getting hot. I've replaced many and the phone does not get hot but some people are rough with their phones and thast when it normally happens. good luck, hope this helps.
