The Basics
- Check your Game's Deadzone Settings: Open Settings and select Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles > Create Custom Profile and OK. Select Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone. Try to experiment with a higher stick drift to see if this resolves your issue with your controller.
- Clean the Controller. Use 90% Isopropyl Alcohol and a cotton swab to clean around the dome of the thumb stick. Be sure to move the tumb sticks around to allow the rubbing alcohol to work its way into the bearing.
- Restart your Console and Controller: Turn off your gaming console. Once your console is off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. This can help reset any software issues affecting your controller. You will also want to do the same power cycle on your controller. You can do this by holding down the PS button for 10 seconds.
Minor Software Issue
With most instances of your controller experiencing any issue, it could be an issue with the software that allows you to use it. One of the easiest ways to resolve this issue is to reset your controller.
- Turn off your console, and disconnect your controller from your USB cable.
- Locate the small reset button on the back of the controller.
- Push the button with a small, pointy object, such as an unfolded paper clip (or a similar object). The button is in a tiny hole next to the top right screw on the bottom outer shell.
- Hold the button down for several seconds, and release.
In addition, updating your controller firmware can also resolve many different issues.
- Connect the controller to the console using a USB cable.
- Go to Settings > Devices > Controllers > Update System Software.
- If there is an update available, then you should update. This will resolve temporary issues with your controller's software.
While you are in your settings, try updating your console's system. In some instances, a newer update might fix an issue with how the console perceives inputs.
- Open Settings and select System
- Choose System Software Update and Settings
- If an update is available choose Update System Software, and choose Update Using Internet.
Internal Debris
If you find that cleaning the controller externally is ineffective, there might be a chance that dirt or debris has worked its way into the inside of the controller. If you've spilled a sugary drink onto the DualSense, dried sugar may cause Stick Drift.
- Use the Joystick Replacement Guide to access and clean your controller's Joysticks from the inside.
Joystick Wear
Unfortunately, the potentiometers that are responsible for tracking the joystick's movement will wear down over time, as the wiper that tracks these movements scrubs back and forth against the resistive pad resulting in imperfections. You can read more about this specific issue in iFixit's article 'Here’s Why PS5 Joysticks Drift'.
- One of the only way that Joystick Wear can be solved, is to replace the mechanism that is responsible for the joystick's movement. Consider taking a look at iFixit's DualSense Joystick Replacement guide to replace your joystick.
