Lenovo Thinkbook 14 G2 ITL Overheating
Lenovo Thinkbook 14 G2 ITL turns on and fan is running loudly or turns on and no fan is heard both while being hot to the touch. Lenovo Thinkbook 14 G2 ITL refuses to turn on despite cord plugged in and is hot to the touch.
Dirty Fan
The fan is responsible for airflow through the laptop to facilitate cooling. An accumulation of dust or lint on the fan can impair the ability of the fan to send air through the device, causing it to overheat. This would occur with the symptom of a loudly running fan. This will require accessing the fan inside of the device and cleaning it. To clean use compressed air to blow out the dust and debris that build up on the fan. Clean it every 6 months, though the cleaning schedule is dependent on the environment.
Faulty Fan Motor
The fan is responsible for airflow through the laptop to facilitate cooling. Damage to the fan or a defective fan can prevent it from spinning properly or at all, preventing a flow of air to the necessary parts. This would occur with the symptom of no fan sounds being heard at all. This will require accessing the fan motor and replacing it. A short version is: Power off the laptop, unplug the charger, remove the 10 screws and gently remove the bottom cover. Then immediately disconnect the battery cable, disconnect the old fan cable, remove its 3 screws and lift it out, and install the new fan. Then secure it with screws, reconnect the fan and battery cables, snap the cover back on, and finally tighten the screws.
Damaged Battery
Overcharging the device or using a charger of higher then recommended wattage can cause the battery to swell and expand from the components degrading inside of the battery that cause a buildup of gasses within at an accelerated rate. If battery is swollen or distorted, it will need to be replaced immediately. This can be a safety hazard with continued use. In order to replace the battery turn of the device, disconnect the charger in order to allow the device to cool. Remove the head screws from the base cover and lift it. Unplug the battery cable connector from the system board, remove the screws securing the old battery and carefully lift it out, and dispose of the old battery properly. Place the new battery in, screw it in place, connect the battery cord to the motherboard, reattach the base cover and screw it in place, and plug in the charger and allow charging for 10 minutes to ensure the new battery has a charge.
Dried Thermal Paste
Thermal paste is a substance used to improve heat transfer between surfaces. It is commonly applied to CPUs and GPUs to enhance cooling efficiency. Over time, this compound can dry up primarily because of evaporation of its liquid which is caused by consistent heat cycling from the processor. To replace it, clean the CPU/GPU and heat sink surfaces with isopropyl alcohol as well as a lint-free cloth. Then apply a pea-sized amount of thermal paste to the center of the CPU/GPU and gently install the heat sink making sure to avoid overtightening.
Improper Air Flow
Try to avoid using the laptop on a soft surface, such as a bed or blankets or even your lap, as this can block the air vents from getting proper flow, leading to overheating. Try placing the laptop on a hard, flat surface or elevating the back of it slightly to allow air into the cooling system.
Software Issues
High fan noise can be caused by a variety of software issues such as too many apps running overworking the CPU, outdated BIOS or drivers impairing thermal management, incorrect fan settings in Lenovo Vantage, or the GPU being overloaded by editing software or malware.
